When I start to read a three-screen-long post I would like to know if it is two minutes old or two decades without first having to scroll down to the end then back up again. Dates are optimally placed at the top, not the bottom of each post.

I'll take that into consideration, but currently our view is that post content comes first because that is ultimately what's important, then the date comes afterwards because it's a time reference and nothing more. Furthermore, we don't want people pre-judging the value of a certain post just because of the date it was originally posted. Many posts, although ten years old, have just as much relevance today as they did a decade ago.
