    Hi,

I would like to run at least 8 monitors & possibly 12, from a Dell Precision M6800 mobile Laptop Workstation.

Monitors I want to run are Dell U2412M ( 1920x1200 ) Ultra Sharp Monitors.

The specs for the Laptop are :

    Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor

    (17.3") UltraSharp FHD(1920x1080)

    8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3L

    AMD FirePro M6100 w/2GB GDDR5

2.5 inch 500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive

Is it possible to do it & if yes, what other hardware, software do I need besides monitors ?

    Many Thanks

Docking station for your Precision Workstation...and several video cards in that workstation...I'd give Dell a call...That's the best I can do...

  3. Difficult to run that many monitors from a laptop.

Better to run from a desktop with 3, PCIEx16 slots for video cards.

  4. What is the rationale for running 12 monitors from a laptop?

I don't think you are going to travel and mount up 12 monitors in a hotel room to trade. So the likely scenario is: you do all your trading on your laptop, so that when you go out for a coffee or do a short trip, everything is there at your finger tip. But when you are at home, you can display the charts on up to 12 monitors.

It will be very challenging to find a video card that is capable to support 12 monitors that will fit inside a laptop. Even if there is one exist, the heat dissipation will be a big problem.

I have a HP laptop which has an Intel i7 quad processor. I observe that even when I use the built-in VGA adapter and hook up the display to one external monitor, the bottom of the laptop just burn my laps when the market gets heavy (lots of price prints). CPU cycles crank up, power consumption cranks up. I am sure the video card cycles will crank up too. It's that hot. I cannot imagine one that is capable of support multiple monitors inside a laptop chassis - how hot it will get.

I think a better solution is to use a desktop to drive your 12 monitors. I have a couple of those desktops myself. If you want up-to-date trading data/history available on your laptop, just some file-synchronization software to sync the two systems. You can always quickly fold up your laptop and go.

And by the way, if you are running Windows 7, I may be wrong but I think it only can deal with a maximum of 10 monitors. I don't know about Win8.

  6. W7 apparently natively handles up to 10 monitors, but you can display more with other multi-mon software. I've seen a pic with 64 monitors a blazin'.

  7. Thanks Scat! I figure that people can do all kinds of things with special software.

  8. Except balance the Federal Budget.

  9. Would be much easier getting a desktop for that...

  10. +1
