The vast majority of police are heroes, honest hardworking professionals.

Why would anyone (besides criminals) want to cut law enforcement resources?

I agree police brutality is bad, but most police don't do that as far as I know. Just require bodycams always on. But defunding police is a big mistake imho

There's a second way to look at this.

The police consume a large budget and have a vested interest in the creation of escalation. Quite a sum of their funding comes from the need for them to be first responders in situations with drug addicts, suicidal people, and other mental health issues. Coincidentally, these people are also highly likely to be brutalized, or in many cases, killed in cold blood by a cop that "just wants to get home safe".

Instead some of the funds given to the police for these purposes can be re-purposed to fund social programs, drug rehabilitation, and therapy for at-risk populations. In other words, identifying at-risk populations and providing them help and support before the police have the opportunity to brutalize a person who may not even be in total control of their actions. A secondary benefit of this is without as much funding the police also won't be able to deploy bearcats and MRAPs to seize half a pound of weed.

Defunding as a method of re-routing funds to better social programs for at-risk populations is a net good for all. The police have demonstrated they are incompetent at being social workers and so they do not deserve the money they get from these programs.

If this is what they mean by "defund" and "disband," then they should clarify (if they haven't already). The casual observer simply hears them demanding, "GET RID OF THE POLICE!"

  7. Rather than "strangers armed with guns," the organization says, first responders should be mental health providers, social workers, victim advocates and other community members in less visible roles.

    9-1-1: What's your emergency?

Me: There are two guys trying to break down my door saying they want to rob everything and fuck my dog

9-1-1: Hold on sir, I have social worker en route to talk to the criminals about what they are doing and a therapist for your dog to handle what is about to happen.

This is a wonderful idea. The police are ill equipped to handle the many situations where mental instability, alcoholism and drug use is at the center of a disturbance. We need a very different response, and very different facilities than jails, for these situations then what, in many communities, we have now.

We should also consider hiring somewhat fewer police officers, paying the ones we have more, requiring better training and education, and holding them to a higher standard of conduct and ethics.

All of these problems that have for so many years been ignored and swept under the rug are coming to the surface. It leaves one weak to realize how very much revision and fundamental change is sorely needed.
