As we all know, the vast majority of families residing at the White House are black. Yet we see relatively few black agents in the Secret Service. The color spectrum of the Secret Service (POTUS detail) does not reflect the people they "protect". As has been pointed out by Ferguson, white agents have a harder time interacting with and relating to black people than black agents. Nobody can understand the President and his family as well as a black Secret Service. Nobody can serve them as well, understand their perspectives and meet their needs as people of color. This is not just about finding the most qualified candidates. Sometimes as a society, we have higher needs than the actual job requirements, especially those written by white people to exclude blacks. We have higher needs such as Social Justice and Equality of Opportunity. Just because some downtrodden youth accidentally shot a few people (all of whom deserved it) or gave a very passionate speech at a fringe mosque is no reason to bar him from a fulfilling life. They should have the opportunity to lay down their lives for the President, just like all those white people. It is high time we leveled the playing field and brought the Secret Service into the 21st century. Bring Social Justice to the Secret Service! Make the POTUS detail all black!
