This thread is to discuss the Tesla short position of William, The Great. How big it is, how much he is up? Also other famous people or HFs holding similar Tesla shorts. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/23/elo...nfronted-bill-gates-about-shorting-tesla.html Back in late April: "Elon Musk has accused Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates of shorting Tesla. In a tweet on Friday, the Tesla CEO admitted that he asked Gates if he was short-selling shares of the electric carmaker. When investors short a stock, they are betting that the price of the asset will fall. “I heard from multiple people at TED that Gates still had half billion short against Tesla, which is why I asked him, so it’s not exactly top secret,” Musk said in the tweet." Any info on when Gates started to short Tesla? Around the article the stock was at 340. From May: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-05-28/musk-says-gates-has-multi-billion-dollar-tesla-short-position?leadSource=uverify wall "Bill Gates has a short position against Tesla Inc. that would now need between $1.5 billion and $2 billion to close out, Elon Musk said Friday in a series of tweets. Musk said the position was $500 million and grew after Tesla “went up a lot.” May 27, 2022 From Marketwatch: "Bill Gates wasn't the only investor to make big money betting against Tesla. As it turns out, short-sellers reaped nearly $7 billion in 2022." ---May
Eventually the air was going to come out of Tesla stock, but oh man did some of the early shorts take a beating. Facts don't always matter in investing and it is funny to me to see the big names of investing/trading getting their ass handed to them when they can't see the obvious.
First, Elon doesn't give a shit about the planet. Maybe Mars, but not Earth. Second, if Tesla was overvalued (and oh boy it was) shorting it makes sense. You are on elitetrader, Sir, not on planersaver.com
The joke is going to be on the shorts. Elon Musk just announced a buyback of TSLA stock. This might be a case of AMC, GME. To the moon.
That's why I find the story kinda hard to believe. Gates already has more money than he can spend and he fancies himself as a huge philanthropist. Why would he short a "green" company just to make money.Dont make sense to me. Has Gates admitted doing it?
you know how many natural resources go into building teslas and running tesla plants and service centers? And you think spending $100k on a car that doesnt use gas is saving the planet??? Where the fuck does the electricity come.from when you plug your tesla in and night? If tsla is a bloated overpriced stock with a CEO going over the rails while competition like Lucid and all major automakers catch up even Greta Thornburg would short that stock.to make.money.
It was not Gates himself doing the shorting, but the portfolio manager who manages his family office wealth. The TSLA short was a hedge for the long side of Gate's stock portfolio.
It still makes Gates a little bit guilty if he knew about the short position. Out of the hundreds of companies out there to short it makes one wonder why that portfolio manager chose TSLA?
