I tend to believe Vindman's explanation for why Putin moved now. Basically, Jan. 6. That shitshow revealed to the world how chaotically divided we really are. One clue both he and Putin are right, there's a sizable slice of our voters who are siding with Putin.

 

Did they even? This excuse just doesn't hold to the most minor scrutiny. Ukraine wanting to join NATO does not equal US lobbying for Ukraine in NATO.

oh, yeah. countries join nato all the time without consulting the most powerful member (the u.s.)

especially ukraine. that's not important enough for u.s. approval.

 

This is how this convo went:

Joe: "Hey CIA, Zelensky called and wants to join NATO, what are the nat. sec. implications?"
CIA: "That's a redline Mr. President."
Joe: "OK, we'll just approach it like Taiwan, thanks"

I think Putin also knows even the Europeans cannot work together that easily so if walked into Ukraine, they all would light their square in Ukraine colors and send out tweets and thoughts and prayers but do little else so not much risk.

I do think the sanctions this time globally might hurt the Russian economy a lot more than in the past but it might take time...the fact that bank transfers and commerce are being affected in larger numbers, even FIFA getting involved shows Putin has only one ally, china.
