Biden commission’s draft materials on Supreme Court reform show split over adding justices

A growing chorus of critics — especially those furious with the tactics used by Republicans to appoint the three most recent justices — have called to expand the size of the bench. Proponents include former presidential candidates and Cabinet members.

Some of the commissioners agree with the pro-expansion arguments, “at least in part,” the draft materials said. But other commissioners concluded that adding seats “is likely to undermine, rather than enhance, the Supreme Court’s legitimacy and its role in the constitutional system,” the commission wrote.

“There are significant reasons to be skeptical that expansion would serve democratic values,” the commission added. “We also raise some tentative concerns about how expansion of the Supreme Court might be received in the broader domestic and international community.”

President Joe Biden created the commission via executive order in April, assembling a bipartisan panel of scholars, lawyers, advocates and former judges to probe arguments for and against reforming the high court.

Supreme Court commission signals ‘profound disagreement' on court packing ahead of Tuesday vote

President Joe Biden 's U.S. Supreme Court Commission has released a draft report signaling "profound disagreement" regarding the size of the nation's highest bench but offering a more sympathetic view to the possibility of term limits for justices.

The bipartisan commission of legal experts was established to analyze the fundamental framework of the nation's highest court to determine whether changes should be made at a time when polls show public approval of the Supreme Court has dropped significantly in recent months. The commission will convene Tuesday to discuss and vote on whether to approve sending the report to the president.

It ain't happening. If it does it will be when McConnell tells his dog Manchin in time to give the House to the GOP

Democrats got the most votes in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections yet Republican judges make up 6 of the 9 judges on The SC.Indeed, not very democratic, nor is gerrymandering,The Electoral College ,The Senate being 50-50 but democrat Senators representing 20 million more people etc.

  7. Did Warren say anything about why she disagrees with Saint Ginsberg who was adamantly opposed to it. along with Breyer?

    Probably not.

We live in a republic Copernicus.
There may be 20M more people, but guess what.... the state count in the Senate is 25 to 25.

    Definition of a republic:

In a republic, laws are made by representatives chosen by the people and must comply with a constitution that specifically protects the rights of the minority from the will of the majority.

    Don't rewrite the Constitution Tony.
    Is what it is.
Quit crying and get over it.

If thats the case we don't have a republic Vanny as many of our representatives like our last president are not chosen by the people.

Ah, that old "it's a constitutional Republic" canard. They'd love it in N. Korea, China, Cuba, Vietnam. All one-party state republics w/constitutions.

Ah...who am I fooling? The events leading to Jan 6 proves they want a one-party state republic.
