Whatever happened to separation of Church and State? You simply don't teach religion in public schools. N-fucking-O

Say what? Understanding the religion of groups of people throughout history is absolutely important to a classical education.

You are mistaking core classes from electives, which is rare until high school and more likely to begin at college level.

Say what I said. You simply don't teach religion in public schools. How plain can I say it? The first amendment. You have the freedom to practice your religion, but you do NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to force it on other people, by "teaching it" in a public institution.

When I went to primary school, there were 5 main subjects.

Math, science, history, English, social studies, (and phys. ed). In none of those classes did I learn about Christ, or Moses, or Mohammed, or Krishna...I certainly did not learn about how Zoroastrianism was the first religion to introduce the concept of evil, and I certainly did not learn that the Druids built Stonehenge. I learned that shit on my own.

A kid's brain does not need to be taught about fucking Ramadan when trying to memorize the multiplication tables, and how plants inhale CO2 and exhale O2.

Maybe they'd welcome a bit more CO2 in their lives if they learned shit like that, instead of hearing the BULLSHIT about the fucking spotted owl losing their nests because we need more toilet paper.

    Can't agree more!

And speaking of toilet paper, my kids had to take their own to high school because if the school supplied it, the kids would clog the toilets as pranks. Crazy, huh?

You’re nuts. The separation of church and state is not meant to suppress knowledge. Knowing the difference between a Buddhism and Hinduism is very useful in the real world and there is no reason not to teach kids these things.

Absolutely there is no reason to. Because it doesn't mean shit in the real world they live in. Does it help them manage their finances? Write a check? Cook their own food? Drive a car? Is knowing the difference between a Buddhist and Hindu have any practical impact on their lives?

    NO

All it would do is give them some background in arguing the merits of one religion over another when arguing a belief system. Keep that shit out of public schools, and out of my tax wallet.
