Biden administration weighing $450K-a-person compensation to migrant families separated by Trump The Biden administration is reportedly considering paying out hundreds of thousands of dollars to migrant families separated at the southern border during the Trump administration, about $1 billion in total. Officials from the departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, and Justice have proposed paying each person $450,000, or nearly $1 million per two-person family, to settle claims about the lasting traumatic and psychological effects of being torn apart as a result of former President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance policy, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday afternoon. Outrageous when you consider half the baby boomers have zero retirement savings.
Why don't we demand the immigrant smugglers (coyotes) be forced to pay compensation to the families they broke up as they smuggled unaccompanied minors across the border. Noting the number of unaccompanied minors smuggled by coyotes is many times greater than the families split up while Trump was in office.
Yes, outrageous. Yet this outrage pales by comparison with the outrage we should all feel over our government's separation of children from their families and then losing track of the parents! This is a script right out of Nazi Germany. I am sorry to say, I have no faith whatsoever in the accuracy of reports in the "Washington Examiner", which is about out-of-context-reporting in service of a particular political agenda. When I search for reliable sources of this same report I can find none except those, and there are many, in yellow journalism rags, which includes, sadly since the Murdoch takeover, WSJ. This usually indicates that responsible, mainstream media is waiting for confirmation and details. This link below is to the only reliable report of the sad situation on our border I could find and it does not address the issue of reparations to families intentionally and permanently separated by U.S. agents. see https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2021/03/20/border-family-separation-mexico-biden-477309
They should've all been flown back immediately to country of origin, which should pay for the flights.
Of, course, we should. Such demands are likely to go unmet. But we can atone for our own grave, intentional inhuman treatment of those in our care. We can send immigrants back to whence they came without a fair hearing, which only violates international law to which we are a party. But we should never, ever intentionally violate unalienable human rights.
Is he F'n kidding? What about money for poor, down-and-out American citizens before lavishing huge amounts of money on illegals?? Anyone miss Trump yet?
Who could've seen this coming? Oh yeah: Oh, I'm sorry, are said coyotes government employees sworn to uphold our constitution? Don't worry, this SCOTUS has already granted you your wish of seeing the undocumented as subhuman without the same due process protections as Americans. Precedent is there to sue Biden over psychological trauma we should be allowed to perform on others.
You better keep in mind the family separations were being done under the Obama administration -- long before Trump showed up
Source? Because the OP spells it out in the first sentence. Obama's policy of parental separation was on criminal aliens and in line with what's done by family services.
A lot of people who have worked their whole adult lives that don't have that kind of money in their retirement accounts, especially considering the proposal is per person. Family of four gets $1.8 million, which is a high 90th percentile retirement amount for Americans. Absolutely outrageous.
