Biden Administration Asks Supreme Court To Ignore Harvard Discrimination Case

The Biden administration urged the Supreme Court to ignore a case alleging that Harvard discriminates against Asians in admissions.

The lawsuit accuses Harvard of holding Asians to a higher standard and racially balancing its classes and asks the Court to ban the use of race in college admissions. In a legal brief filed Wednesday night, the Justice Department said the plaintiffs have not given persuasive reasons to revisit landmark rulings that authorize affirmative action.

Though President Joe Biden prioritized female and minority appointments to senior posts, top Democrats panned the lack of Asian representation in his administration. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D., Ill.) and Mazie Hirono (D., Hawaii) threatened to tank some of Biden's picks over the lack of Asian nominees. Despite the dustup, the Justice Department's brief tethers Biden's personnel goals to affirmative action practices at elite schools like Harvard.

There's no doubt that Asians are discriminated against, IMO.

This is the case where Harvard made up a "personality score" that has the effect of limiting Asian admissions.

I really hope the Supreme Court doesn’t fuck this up. There’s a lot of bright kids out there who do not have the time or resources to complete a checklist for school admissions but are absolutely best qualified to go to Harvard.

Harvard gives all kinds of scores for what it calls “tips”. This could be for an inner city minority student or a rural white student.

Try to understand what Harvard is saying, if they base admissions solely on test scores and grades and extracurricular activities and give no weight to the whole student who may be poor and have to work so not able to do extracurricular activities and SAT prep then the student body will actually not mirror the best and brightest and only students with resources to complete a court mandates checklist will get admitted.

It depends on the extent they are fudging the formula to meet affirmative action goals on the bottom, and keep Asians out at the top. There's no need to call it "personality" unless they're trying to circumvent racial discrimination laws...perfectly legal to give preferences to the poor, rural, etc.

The Discrimination That Must Not Be Named

Asian-Americans are not ‘bellyaching’ when they protest their treatment by top colleges

Mr. Meyers implies that racial preferences help those who were the victims of prior discrimination. But take a good look at the demographics of African-Americans who get in to Harvard, and notice the high percentage with recent family from the Caribbean or Africa, or family from the upper-middle class. Middle- and working-class first-generation Asian-American kids, whose parents were refugees from communism, are excluded to make spots for upper-class kids of a higher racial caste. That’s not a remedy that promotes justice.

Asian students (varies by nation) are usually boring conformists at university age and the Chinese ones come with an armload of problems never mind basic stuff like China has absolutely no sex education. This might seem silly but in large numbers it's a real headache for the administration.

Exam passers do not necessarily make leaders.

It would be totally rasist if somebody change "Asian" to "Black" in you sentence but "Asian" is OK I guess.

Black Americans kids have personalities by college so it would not make sense. Also plenty of sex education.

Tiger mom's, highly conformist cultures and all work and no play takes a long time to loosen up.

Google sex education in China before you reply, there was a half assed program in the big cities and it was stopped. I've been to China, I have friends who have seen Chinese students get STDs and knocked up in the first term because they had no clue about where babies come from despite high IQs.
