best free screen shot program for windows 8...

Discussion in 'Trading Software' started by green.green, Mar 19, 2014.

  1. I just switched to running wondows 8 on my mac. Screen shots are easy on a mac. I don't have a printscreen button on my mac keyboard and that method has always been clumsy.

Is there a free program/app for screen shots that doesn't require a ton of steps and allows for some basic editing? (Cropping and saving as different file type etc.) I don't need a ton of features.

    Thanks

    look at jing/snagit...

  3. Windows 8 comes with a "Snipping Tool"

It is on the tile screen. I skipped over W8 and went straight to 8.1 so these directions may be a little off:

Start menu (bottom right), then click the down arrow to bring up all applications. (all the tiles pop up smaller this way) From there find the snipping tool and right click (two finger click on your Mac). Pin to start menu and task bar... From there you can put a shortcut on your desktop if you want to. Just keep it up and open in the background and it'll work.

You can also hit the Windows Start button [which I don't think you have on your mac] and Q so WStart + Q = search . In the search box type "Snipping Tool".

If you are really adventurous just do this:

It'll assign it the cmd+shift+4 shortcut/hotkey combo you are used to with your communist Apple computer. :D

EDIT: By the way, I knew of the windows snipping tool but had never used it so I had no idea it took screen captures like it does (I may be using it to replace SnagIT)... but... it took me all of about 2 minutes on Google to figure all of this out. Even if it took you four minutes, I'd bet you it took about that long to make your thread... Good luck, let us know if you have problems.

  4. I've always used Snipit with Win7 but don't know anything about Apple products since the day the ipods came out and we spent thousands of dollars on them only to find out they are locked proprietary where you have to pay ransom $1 per song even if you already own the mp3 files. So fuck Steve Jobs and everything he ever had anything do to with. That company makes money by unfair and deceptive trade practices. Fuck them. Don't ask me how to use a Mac unless you want instructions on how to throw it in the trash. In that case, open waste receptacle, deposit Apple product, and close waste receptacle.

Not to side track thread, but agree about Apple and their "captive marketing". I transitioned to all Google a few months ago. Nexus 5 & 7, gmail, google calendar, google drive, google play, google play music, docs, chrome. All devices are synced flawlessly: data, contacts, tasks, events, music, video, etc...
[even my MS office is becoming obsolete, I only use "outlook" now as an archive by using IMAP to combine and pull messages from multiple email address's created over the years]

The Google Play "store" has all the apps I need. I will never go back to Apple. I detested iTunes, and Google has solved that for me...

I also have a drawer full of iPhones, iPods etc... My son asked if he could have one of my unused iPhones. My reply, "we will never install that hideous iTunes again", so I ordered him a nexus 5 instead.

Regarding screen capture: I really like http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm
Not free ~ $20/lifetime, but, extremely light, clean.

I never experienced any conflicts using FastStone, but I have had issues with Jing/snagit in the past.

Free isn't always the best choice.

  8. Does Win 8 not come with Paint?

    1. Hit Prt Scr
    2. Open Paint
    3. Choose "File|New" or hit the New button
    4. Hit "Ctrl-V" for paste
    5. Crop/edit the image as needed
    6. Save the file in the preferred format (BMP, JPG, PNG, etc)
    7. Exit

Eazy Peezy... Unless you have more advanced needs and desire an all-in-1 solution.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned IrfanView. It has all the basic image editing features and screenshots are easy (just print screen + paste into irfanview + save). No need for anything else for the basic stuff.
