Hello, I am a bit of novice when it comes to some aspects of charting and technical analysis. While I am fairly adept at the theory, I struggle with getting the design functions I'd ideally like for charting. Currently I use: -ThinkOrSwim trading client -StockCharts.com Lets say I want to look at candlesticks of a specific period (i.e. AAPL stock from June 2004 - June 2009). As in I do not want 2009 and onward and once I filter for the time period I want to appear on the chart I can change the time frame for the candles. Is this possible? The reasoning behind wanting to look at specific time intervals from the past is to study past trade screenshots that other successful traders have made so I could see how they formed a gameplan at their snapshot in time. I'd like to be able to simulate those charts on my own trading clients for learning purposes. Unfortunately, when I attempt to filter the chart, it does not allow for such functions to get a candle chart for specified periods, with an unwavering focus on ending at current data points, but maybe I am not looking hard enough. Cheers.
You need to subscribe or purchase data from an independent data vendor of your desire trading instrument for the specific period. Next, you need to use a software or spreadsheet to input the data you have purchase for analysis. I do not know if ThinkOrSwim or Stockcharts allows inputting (importing) historical data but many others do such (e.g. Ninjatrader, Metatrader, TradeStation, Multicharts, Excel and others) That's exactly what most traders do that needs to access historical data going back that far.
I use stockcharts all the time. You can set your time frame to hourly and then use the slider at bottom to slide to any date you want, or simply type in the date you want. Is this the question you are asking?
I use marketvolume.com, prefer them over stockcharts as they have more features - see comparison here: http://www.marketvolume.com/membership/stockcharts.asp You may just scroll MV charts back in history by leaving 2010 out of the screen. See the chart below those are 5-day candles (1 candle covers 5 days) - it is difficult to fit 5 years of daily candle on a single screen. However if you need daily candles you may just change period setting.
