Mayor Eric Garcetti says the Bat-Signal will be lit at L.A.'s City Hall at 9 p.m. Thursday. In Batman comics, movies and TV shows, the Bat-Signal is a spotlight with the shadow of Batman's winged emblem that is shown on the night sky to call for Batman's help. West died Friday at age 88. Garcetti announced the event on Twitter and added the hashtag, .BrightKnight. The Batman TV series in the '60s was a really big deal for me. Like most kids, I imagine, I best related to a "super hero" without super powers. However, not being much of a team player, I preferred the Batman comic books without Robin. And although I was too young to understand the show's camp, I guess I was old enough to occasionally have dreams about Julie Newmar in her cat suit. Around the time of the TV series, the Batmobile was featured at a local car show. Somewhere in my possession, although I don't know where, is a glossy black & white Polaroid of me standing next to it with its door open. For some reason I have a vague recollection that the photo cost my parents $5 but, in retrospect, that seems a bit excessive for the time. Regardless, it would have been the best $5 my folks ever spent on me. Now if I could only find that picture...
