Miami goes seven weeks without a homicide for first time since 1957 https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/25/us/who-immunity-antibodies-covid-19/index.html and despite claims that lockdowns will cause domestic violence to rise greatly there has been only a small increase in domestic violence calls. Nearly all other crime is down significantly in areas with lockdowns in the U.S.
Probably a fair few bodies in apartments that were not covid 19. It is interesting though, in a very dangerous neighbourhood near me in Colombia a friend says its completely quiet. Last time I was there he and I waterboarded a guy with the split belly of his own (humanely) just put down, lethal dog fighting pit bull. And this was just a Tuesday kind of event for my friend living there. My friend wanted him to leave the area as he was a psychopath and dangerous to kids, sometimes extreme measures.. Nobody dead there either in ages.
Everyone seems to be advocating a re-opening but requiring high risk individuals to stay home and isolated. And we are having it drilled in our heads that minorities are higher risk, so would I be right in thinking that when states re-open that blacks and hispanics will still need to stay home because they are high risk? Where am I going wrong here? Y'all think I am just ticklin' your butt but just wait til AOC pipes up and agrees with me but then says that since they are higher risk and must stay at home that their stimulus monthly supplement should be doubled, if there is one. Yeh. As the joke goes these days: It's almost like Bernie won. Staying home and being paid extra for being black or hispanic- no citizenship required.
So despite all the claims that domestic violence would go up due to COVID-19 --- the reality is that it is dropping. All while the anti-lockdown crowd try to push their new theme that domestic violence dropped in March and April because people were afraid to report it. A narrative that most police departments are not buying either. When is a drop in domestic violence bad news? https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/05/12/metro/when-is-drop-domestic-violence-bad-news/ Boston police reported fewer calls for intimate-partner domestic violence in March and April than in the same period last year — a seemingly positive trend that nonetheless worries officials and advocates who fear victims are reluctant to report abuse while advised to stay at home due to a pandemic. “You’re going to see underreporting because people are afraid. They’re living with their abuser," Attorney General Maura Healey said in an interview Tuesday. "It’s hard for them to make a phone call. It’s hard for them to go online even.” Boston police fielded 1,114 calls for intimate-partner violence in March and April — down 4 percent from the same period last year, according to data released by the department Tuesday. reduced crime? street crime and do it yourself crime, perhaps. as for institutional crime, graft, corruption, crony capitalism, rampant asset absorbtion, the tradoff is like a fly on an elephant's back. there's prob plenty of crime that we'll hear about in a decade or so. We are dealing with human beings after all, politicians, bureaucrats unaccountable, unelected, unresponsive, untouchable. I'll take my chances with street crime over the institutional crime network Any time.
Did you actually read the article? It states that abuse is being under reported due to victims being stuck in their homes with the abuser. Therefore it's not really a drop now is it?
As I noted at the very top in my comments.... many people including police departments doubt this assessment that domestic violence is being under-reported due to the pandemic. Most police departments have a very good idea where domestic violence situations occur because they have been called out there many times previously prior to COVID-19. As noted in the article the complaints for non-domestic situations for roommates and and neighbors has gone up. I guess being stuck at home all day & having to deal with their roommates or their noisy neighbors.
