At Least 5 Dead, More Than A Dozen Injured In Shootings In Western Texas

Police shot and killed one suspect in the shootings that took place in the Midland and Odessa areas.

A suspected shooter was shot and killed at the Cinergy movie theater, according to a statement released by police in Midland, Texas, on Saturday evening.

“As far as civilian casualties, we have at least 21 victims ... and at least five deceased,” Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke said in a press conference. It is not clear whether the 21 figure included the deceased.

He added that three officers were also injured, including one officer with the Odessa Police Department, one with the Midland Police Department and one with the state Department of Public Safety.

The shooting began after a traffic stop, Gerke said. He described the gunman as a white male in his mid-30s.

“It has been confirmed that the active shooter was shot and killed at the Cinergy in Odessa,” Midland police around 5:30 p.m. local time. “There is no active shooter at this time. All agencies are investigating reports of possible suspects.”

About an hour previously, a police spokesperson in the neighboring town of Odessa told HuffPost that shootings had been taking place “literally all around town.”

“We’re just telling everyone to stay in their house right now,” she said.

The Midland Memorial Hospital received six patients from the shooting, three who were in critical condition and three who were stable, a hospital spokesperson told HuffPost.

While reporting on the shooting, CB7 news anchors were forced to evacuate their studio located at Music City Mall in Odessa as police searched the area.

Details of the rampage remain unclear: Midland and Odessa police had said there were multiple suspects; that one had hijacked a U.S. Postal Service truck; and that there was a shooter at a local Home Depot.

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, located in Odessa, was placed on lockdown as police searched for the suspects.

In a statement, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) called the shooting a “senseless and cowardly attack” and said state officials were working closely with local law enforcement.

President Donald Trump said he was briefed about the shootings and said the FBI was “fully engaged” in the situation.

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, a Texas native, tweeted his support to the people of Midland and Odessa.

Four weeks earlier, O’Rourke took a break from his campaign to return to his hometown of El Paso after a deadly mass shooting there left 22 dead.

Police in Texas say at least two active shooters in two separate vehicles -- one of which is a mail van -- are firing rounds at drivers on the road ... and 2 people are already dead.

The Midland Police Department are warning motorists between their city and neighboring Odessa to stay indoors, as someone in a gold and white Toyota truck and another person in a USPS postal van are shooting folks at random from within the vehicles. Authorities are saying the mail van was hijacked by at least one of the suspects.

The mayor of Midland, Jerry Morales, told the media that at least two people have already been killed and and possibly up to 20 others are injured, so far. The two suspects are said to have initially gone on a shooting spree at Home Depot near Odessa.

They are still at large, and clearly armed and dangerous.

3:38 PM PT -- Midland Police have confirmed that there was just one active shooter on the road, and that person is now dead after being gunned down by police at a movie theater in Odessa. Authorities are saying there is no longer an active shooting threat.

4:22 PM PT -- Authorities in Texas say that at least 5 people were killed in the shooting rampage, and that at least 21 others were injured. The shooter, who police have identified as a white male in his 30s, is also dead.

Weird...there were reports of multiple shooters when it first happened, even one site saying they had a guy in custody. Suddenly all the links to these pages only mention one shooter.

Not weird.Police first said multiple shooters than later said single white guy.It happens often in situations like these.

Over 3 dozen people arrested as potential mass shooters since white supremacist terrorist attack in El Paso

Authorities have been aggressively investigating potential mass shooters since the white supremacist terrorist attack at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

“In the four weeks since a 21-year-old alleged white nationalist was charged in the slaughter of 22 people inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, law enforcement authorities have arrested more than 40 people as potential mass shooters — an average of more than one per day,” the Huffington Post reported Saturday.

A HuffPost survey of these arrests likely didn’t capture every one, but it offers a snapshot of the types of cases that law enforcement officials face in a country with easy access to weapons capable of killing a lot of people quickly. The cases range from allegations of vague social media threats from juveniles that set parents on edge to well-developed plots from people who had access to weapons and appeared to authorities to have been planning a mass murder,” HuffPost revealed. “There were roughly a dozen cases involving right-wing ideology. There were at least a dozen alleged threats against schools. There were half a dozen cases involving alleged threats against Walmarts.”

Patrick Crusius was arrested for the El Paso attack, which killed 22 people and injured 24. He reportedly published a right-wing manifesto on 8chan shortly before the shooting.
