https://www.cnn.com/travel/amp/southwest-flight-cancellations-wednesday/index.html Not sure what Buttigieg will do other than finger-wag. Southwest cancelled a lot of flights last Christmas season as well. Clearly the DOT has done nothing to solve the problem as it’s only gotten worse. Part of the solution would be simple to me. Airlines that cancel flights should offer to re-book their customers onto rival airlines and get them home ASAP. They can work together to negotiate rates, but obviously it will be at the cancelling airline’s expense. Same should be true with airport-based rental car companies that overbook. I remember being on the island of Hawaii and having to take a bus to Hilo one time to get a rental car, because Hertz had no cars in Kona despite booking well in advance. It might bump up fares a tad on the margins, but the current situation is unacceptable.
Thinking of rebooking your flight on an airline other than Southwest? Hope you are in the top 1%. AA will boot someone who purchased a cheap ticket and pay them $1,350 -- which is the max compensation for overbooking.
LUV cancelled all their.flights because of weather issues...you think the other airlines could absorb a few thousand travellers while suffering from the same issues...during a holiday week. DOT cant do anything and other airlines had no space.
Note that Southwest has stated that the majority of their flight cancellations are due to operational issues --- not due to weather. The weather was just the trigger for the complete meltdown of the airline. The federal DOT has demanded Southwest refund their customers money for the flights after the weather abated and not attempt to claim that they were cancelled due to "weather". Southwest agreed to this condition late yesterday. The majority of Southwest flights are cancelled until January 1st. And they may not even be able to get most of the airline operational by the 1st. Note that the other airlines have had very few cancellations for many days now. There is something wrong with other airlines advertising prices for flights at very high levels and then kicking existing ticketed passengers involuntarily off of their flights with flight vouchers worth a few hundred measly dollars -- if new people booked these high priced tickets.
ahhh mea culpa....well Southwest likes to.walk that fine line along cheap airfare and limited.service i guess it took one domino to take down the whole system..... I cant with the Southwest and frontier.... I would.rather work jobs to afford.to fly united haha
Around 10 years ago SW lost my luggage and didn't get it back to me for 3 days. That was the last time I flew SW.
They all suck. Delta is probably rated the highest, but Delta sent my brand new bag to LGA (so no previous tags on it) when I flew nonstop from FLL to SLC in March. It was tagged SLC with 2 other bags that arrived on time. They first flew it to ATL the next morning, but at least I got it by noon. Cost me over half a ski day. Not sure how the hell that happens. I wish I could say from now on I'm only flying private, but I don't have that kind of $$$.
