NEW YORK (AP) — An appeals court has thrown out the massive civil fraud penalty against President Donald Trump, ruling Thursday in New York state’s lawsuit accusing him of exaggerating his wealth. The decision came seven months after the Republican returned to the White House. A panel of five judges in New York’s mid-level Appellate Division said the verdict, which stood to cost Trump more than $515 million and rock his real estate empire, was “excessive.”
Merely temporary. "Thursday’s decision, which was not unanimous, leaves Trump still liable for fraud. The judges aligned to uphold his liability and toss the penalty so the case could move forward for further appellate review."
The judges stated they expected the case to go to the next level of appeals -- they merely tossed the penalty so the case could proceed.
