Anyone live around U of Alabama?

We have a son who is heading to Tuscaloosa and the U to work on a PhD come the fall. Wondering if someone has any thoughts on good areas to live within reasonable distance to campus. He has gotten some ideas from the professor who he will be working under, but would be great to get some other input also.
I'm heading down there with him in a couple weeks to look around campus, meet his prof in person, and look for a place to live.
