Another accounting question

Discussion in 'Taxes and Accounting' started by SoCalOptionsWriter, Oct 21, 2022.

  1. Background: I use Schwab, for better and worse, for both equities and futures, and because it is one account, the cash flows back and forth between them nightly, when needed. I know I should separate the two. I also take withdrawals, to complicate things further.

    Now, to calculate combined and seperate monthly and YTD ROI, to me, seems like it's beyond my math capabilities or maybe it will just take too much time. Schwab doesn't help because it sends out two different statements for futures and equities. And its futures accounting doesn't even put in ROI.

    I yearn for something akin to Interactive Brokers' portfolio analyst. But lacking that, I'm wondering if there is a bookkeeper, software service, or something short of an expensive full-on audit by my non-trading specialist tax CPA (I'm not using this as part of registration paperwork or raising money, just my own edification) can straighten this out for me. Look online for a freelancer in India?

    If you are somewhat proficient with excel, sounds like it is something you can do yourself.
    Just a matter of setting up the proper columns and formulas.

    Track your equities closely, it is not m2m. The rest is futures m2m. Or you can turn off the auto sweep function if any.

  4. Yeah, the sweep thing is the wrinkle, I think. Will examine. I also wonder what an actual professional audit would cost me, not that I am about to register or anything. I just want to make sure I am doing it the industry-accepted way, and not, perhaps, fooling myself.

    Sounds like you need a separate SCHW account for equites;
    even if that was a tax free account.
    And that way would make the % on both easier to see.
    Even if a CPA is ok with one account; i want 2 in that case.
    I get SCHW paper summary monthly+ red + blue ink line it later.............
    Doesnt sound like you need a pro audit;
    SCHW monthly paper staement= complete, since you noted ''not raising money....''
