Oooh...snap. So sorry, GWB. North Carolina is the worst in the country for deaths per 100 NH residents. Florida no longer the best, but still near the bottom, now 13. How about cases per 100 residents? Holy crap, what the hell is DeSantis doing to your state, GWB? Hey, thanks for turning me on to this website. https://www.aarp.org/ppi/issues/caregiving/info-2020/nursing-home-covid-dashboard.html
Yes... you are correct. North Carolina has moved to the top of nursing home deaths per 100 residents in recent weeks. This is a big issue in our state -- which is not ignored but has been regularly address/discussed by government officials at all levels. Everything was going well in our state until they allowed nursing home indoor visitations starting on September 28, 2020 under pressure from lawyers demanding the visits. After this the nursing home deaths and cases went up -- but they really exploded in January after holiday season visits to nursing homes. Some nursing homes still did not allow visits after this NC HHS proclamations. It is interesting to note that these are the nursing homes that did not endure cases and deaths. Others which allowed visitation had significant issues. Some families tried to proclaim family members as "essential caregivers" via the courts in an attempt to get around visitation time limits, restrictions and guidelines in some nursing homes. North Carolina's recent experience with nursing homes demonstrates the importance of locking down these facilities fully until vaccinations are widespread across the residents & staff, and the local community COVID rates are much lower. Plus the importance of not allowing visitors from out-of-state. The recent experience with COVID in nursing homes in North Carolina should be an important lesson to other states about the importance of keeping nursing home residents safe -- and the fiasco caused by allowing indoor & close-contact visits.
I think this is an excellent overview as to why the problem exists - much of what you write makes sense. It would be interesting to see the NC data as of the October print to see what impact that had. Still, I don't know that I would place the blame on the shoulders of Roy Cooper in the same way you'd throw rocks at DeSantis for the very same were it the case.
In regards to Cooper and DeSantis.... you have to ask if the Cooper administration hid any of the COVID data -- regarding nursing homes or any other statistics --- in order to drive his political agenda. The answer is "No" - Cooper did not hide any data, in fact some of the COVID data is to his detriment politically such as this nursing home situation.
Because if I asked the Cooper administration if he hid data, he'd tell me "yes" if he did? What a joke.
The COVID data in North Carolina in very transparent and reviewed by medical researchers at multiple universities. The data in Florida is not transparent and DeSantis refuses to allow university researchers to review Florida's COVID data. If the DeSantis administration was transparent with the COVID data and then made decisions while referencing proper data -- then I would not excessively criticize him. Even if the decisions went against the data -- if DeSantis made decisions regarding COVID re-openings stating his reasons (economic, etc.) while showing the public proper data then there would be little to criticize. Along as he accepted responsibility for decisions which did not go well (and there will be some for most governors). The problem with DeSantis is that he hid the data (in fact he admitted hiding federal reports) in order to drive his political agenda. This lack of transparency undermines public trust. It should also be mentioned that DeSantis doesn't even have a written vaccination plan for Florida -- as required by the Federal government. Florida is the only state without one.
Well it certainly appears that the residents of nursing homes are doing a lot better than NC! So you can shout all you want about "proper" this and that, but the numbers in Florida look just peachy. And that's what is important. You're the guy at the football game pointing out all the problems with the coach and the offensive coordinator. I'm the guy just pointing to the scoreboard.
AARP. The for-profit company that advocates for everyone to start feeling old and feeble the moment you turn 50. And who spend GOBS of money to get all the personal info on you they can. The day before my 50th B-Day I got an invitation to join them, in the mailbox. <-----True story. Farcical organization. Bunch of BS I tell you.
Healthcare lobbyists pay politicians to protect their bottom line.....so the most vulnerable were thrown under the bus, making the China virus far more deadly. Pure greed and incompetence cost lives.
