I am wondering if it would be possible, if one had the money and the risk tolerance of course, to open a million or more options contracts in indexes such as NDX, SPX, Russell 2000 etc. These all have pretty solid liquidity, but of course it depends on the strike price of the option among other factors. Anybody able to contribute here? Bearing in mind, that in recent years position limits on options for these indexes were removed completely. Whereas the usual cap for stock options is between 25,000 and 250,000 depending upon daily volume.
Some listed and some upstairs - it could take a while on a calm day. Active day it could take a few days tied to index value. So the answer it depends and could take some time. Add SPY as a possible choice and deduct some time as your bring in additional exchange liquidity. Earlier in the trading would help and the first piece to hit will back a number off dealers off.
If you want to do more than 500 contracts on stock options or less on SPX then call the Interactive brokers desk in Chicago and they will shop it for you. Number is on their website.
