It's a sad story. A degree is now required for entry into the middle class. Students really have little choice, unless they want to go to a trade school. Then they graduate with crushing debt and a worthless degree that qualifies them for a job as an Uber driver. You would think the answer might be to encourage them to get STEM degrees so they are at least qualified to do something, but then Trump wants to give all those decent jobs to foreigners.
I have a friend who got a degree in History. Became an assistant manager at a Village Inn restaurant. Didn't pay enough so he got into plumbing. He later bought out the retiring owner. Says, "Good money in plumbing if you're willing to get your hands dirty". Seems every time I call a pro to do something, it's always "$100/hr" or so. (I needed a "locate" to find a buried sprinkler valve... the guy wanted "$250 for the 1st 1/2 hour... $100/hr if it took longer to find". To scan the lawn with a metal detector?? And he obviously expected he'd be able to find it within 30 minutes, so why the $250 charge?) $400 for a new water heater, $900 to install it! Sheesh. Many young people would be better off getting into a trade. (I recall about 10 years ago the Audi dealer wanted $175/hr labor charge to replace the clutch.) If I had a college age kid today, I would not pay $100K or $200K to send him to college to get "Lefty brainwashed".
No one forces kids to major in useless majors.. Also colleges have classes on communism, conservative politics as well as socialist leanings..its called college.....you learn about everything.
Extreme liberal Socialist and Communist professors will soon find themselves out of a job. They love to use Corona Virus for political purposes like nail salons, bars, etc need to be shutdown but, rioters are given carte blanche permission to loot, burn and destroy businesses? No social distancing and everyone packed like sardines in a small area. Now, that the extreme liberal teachers unions push for online education entirely, that expands the demand for online education. On the plus side, you can have your kids educated by foreign teachers who probably, care more for our kids than, trying to indoctrinate your kids to the so called virtues of Socialism and Communism. You can get competent teachers now online from other countries. Also, it now opens the "outsourcing" of teaching videos which can be recorded from other distant countries and used by school districts over and over for decades down the line. They can always, update the teaching videos.
I do not go into politics and ideology, but I was also dissatisfied with my college education. There was too much theoretical material and practical skills at a minimum.
