The most closely controlled study of COVID-19 has been the USS Theodore Roosevelt which the military and public health organizations have studied in depth. It is now quite clear that 40% of those infected with COVID-19 never develop antibodies. This obviously demonstrates that "natural herd immunity" is a myth. A vaccine will be required to provide herd immunity with follow-up testing after the vaccine to ensure antibodies are present.

The results are not surprising since other coronavirus variants such as the common cold do not lead to the development of anti-bodies in many humans -- which is why individuals can catch the common cold over and over again.

This lack of antibodies in 40% of those who have been infected obviously is associated with the re-infection of 14 sailors based on medical commentary. The 40% figure is among a young, healthy population -- the percentage who fail to develop anti-bodies in a older population is most likely higher.

The results found across the USS Theodore Roosevelt sailors puts a stake through the heart of the "natural herd immunity" nonsense and obviously failed public health policies promoted by countries such as Sweden.

Even in a group of entirely healthy young people, only 60% of those infected with coronavirus developed antibodies

    • A severe coronavirus outbreak hit the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a Navy aircraft carrier stationed in the Pacific, in late March and April.
    • Nearly one-quarter of the carrier's 4,800-person crew was infected.
    • A new study shows that one in every five infected sailors showed no symptoms, and just 60% of those infected developed coronavirus antibodies.
    • The researchers also found that sailors who wore face masks, avoided common areas, and practiced social distancing were less likely to become infected.
The sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt are young and healthy, with few underlying medical conditions.

That didn't stop the coronavirus from wreaking havoc aboard the Navy ship, infecting nearly one-quarter of the 4,800-person crew in late March and April. The severe outbreak forced the Navy ship to dock in Guam for two months, while every crew member was tested and 80% of the ship was cleaned and disinfected.

Now, new research published Tuesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals what conditions aboard the cramped carrier facilitated that spread.

The study found that one in every five infected sailors had no symptoms, and just 60% of a group of infected crew members developed antibodies that could neutralize the virus.

"This finding may give us an early glimpse into actual immune protection against [the coronavirus] in young adults having these intense viral exposures aboard the ship," Daniel Payne, a CDC epidemiologist and the study's lead author, told Stars and Stripes.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt reported its first COVID-19 cases on March 24, docking a few days later in Guam so more than 80% of the crew could be evacuated ashore and isolated in hotels to prevent further spread

Testing showed that 1,273 of the carrier's nearly 4,800 crew members were infected, most of which had mild or no symptoms (several sailors, however, were hospitalized and one died).

Only 382 of those 1,273 infected sailors volunteered to participate in the CDC study.

Between April 20 and 24, those 382 sailors filled out questionnaires about their habits aboard the ship and provided samples for antibody testing. Three-quarters of that cohort were male crew members, about 60% were non-Hispanic white, and their average age was 30 years.

Antibody tests revealed that nearly 60% of those 382 study participants had developed neutralizing antibodies, proteins that help our bodies disable the invading virus. In several infected sailors, those antibodies were still detectable more than 40 days after they started showing symptoms, which the study authors said was "a promising indicator of at least short-term immunity."

The value of this study, Payne said, is that it's the first to examine how the virus spreads within a group of young, healthy adults — a cohort at far less risk of developing severe coronavirus cases than older individuals with preexisting health problems.

The carrier's antibodies results go against scientific evidence suggesting that nearly everyone who has had COVID-19 — regardless of age, sex or severity of illness — should develop antibodies.

One May study found that 20 coronavirus patients, including two people with severe cases that required hospitalization, all developed antibodies to fight the virus. The average age of those patients was 44.

For now, it's unclear why the remaining 40% of young, healthy participants from aboard the Navy carrier didn't have these neutralizing proteins.

About one in five infected sailors were asymptomatic
Payne and his colleagues found that 18.5% of the 382 study participants, so roughly one in five, showed no symptoms despite being infected. Among the 284 symptomatic sailors, loss of smell and taste were the most common symptoms, followed by fever and chills.

The risk of infection was double for crew members who shared a berth with someone who'd tested positive.

The CDC study authors also found that sailors who reported wearing face masks were less likely to become infected, as were those who avoided common areas and practiced social distancing.

Now that the USS Theodore Roosevelt is back on active duty in the Pacific, these findings could inform additional safety and health precautions onboard.

Navy officials are now working to "tailor our public health practices to the unique characteristics of this adversary whose secret weapon, as you know, is the ability to be transmitted by an individual before they know they're infected," Rear Adm. Bruce Gillingham, the US Navy surgeon general, said in a Tuesday media briefing.

  3. This virus now goes into the climate change myth category. Data doesn't jive with what's actually happening, just change the data. The earth hasn't frozen over, or burned to a crisp so we just keep changing the time frames and focus like a laser on the occasional anomaly.
The hospitals are packed with dead and dying weeks after tens of millions have hit the streets for good times and bad, now you have no possibility of immunity. We're all gonna' die if we don't stay locked down. At some point the Covid boogie man of death to all who disobey has to actually show up, and that point passed more than a month ago.

If we went through every Covid-19 post that you put out where you were absolutely wrong, we would be here a long time.

Cut it out, it is not cute anymore.

i provide facts, medical studies and meaningful information. All with links to back it all up.

You only spout fact-free commentary - never with any links or information to back you assertions.

You are so full of shit...far from providing facts... you just fraudulent mis represented the science.

Fact... If a vaccine can work by creating antibodies... natural herd immunity can most likely work too.

Nothing in your article indicates we can't get natural herd immunity.

It may take longer than I would have hoped but 60% showing antibodies is very helpful for future prospects of herd immunity with or without a vaccine.

You are such a crazy douche on this stuff.
If you ever run across some science showing we can't get herd immunity please post it... til then you are a fool.

    Additionally
    1. we don't know the vaccines are picking up all the antibody types we might be producing.
    2. we don't know that there may not be some sort of cycle. Some antibodies come out at first then others later.
    3. We have seen other papers which suggest the higher the viral load or the sicker you are... the more likely you are to develop antibodies. I read older people seem to develop antibodies more often. Its quite possible young healthy sailors did not develop antibodies because they did not get very sick... but they could still be good for herd immunity because they might not be able to pass on the virus for long if ever.

In short... fuck you doomer (here4dnc... nice call) next time don't lie about the science.

wow... GWdoucheBag outright lied.... and misrepresented what the paper explicitly wrote.

What the fuck is wrong with you GWB?

the researchers found that some of the infected..... showed promising signs of immunity...

"Approximately one half of the participants with positive ELISA results also had neutralizing antibodies, which indicate functional antibodies that would be expected to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection. This is a promising indicator of immunity, and in several participants, neutralizing antibodies were still detectable >40 days after symptom onset. Ongoing studies assessing the humoral antibody response over time will aid the interpretation of serologic results in an outbreak investigation such as this."

    FACTS:
Vaccines work by creating antibodies. In some individuals vaccines don't take and they need to be vaccinated again. In some individuals a vaccine never takes and they do not develop antibodies - for example the Mumps vaccine never developed antibodies for me despite multiple attempts I am one of the 3% of the U.S. population that are unprotected despite having the Mumps vaccine.

However the percentage of people developing immunity from a vaccination is much higher than the percentage developing immunity by allowing a disease to naturally run wild across a population - -with all the terrible associated health consequences. As noted in all the medical research on measles - it is nearly impossible for a population to acquire much above a 50% natural herd immunity - this is enough to slow a disease but not to eliminate it.

If 40% of the people who are infected with a virus do not develop antibodies then "natural herd immunity" will never work when you need at least 70% of the population to have antibodies to have herd immunity. This is simple and straight-forward math -- and it is also why a vaccine is needed which has a much higher antibody success rate than naturally catching the coronavirus.

Bottom line - Anyone proposing "natural herd immunity" as a method to address COVID-19 is completely out of their mind. Sweden has learned this the hard way --- now nearly every other country in Europe is refusing entry to Swedes due to their epic public health failure.

I posted the complete paper earlier. Why don't you read the ENTIRE paper and UNDERSTAND it rather than posting a single paragraph that mentions that it is hopeful that the 60% that showed immunity still showed neutralizing antibodies after 40 days. Yes, this is hopeful for vaccine development, but it is not helpful at all for "natural herd immunity" when 40% of the infected do not develop antibodies.

Learning science is not that hard -- you should try to learn the basics.

If it's 40% instead of 100%, wouldn't that just mean that natural herd immunity could occur after a higher percentage of people have been infected? Like, instead of 60/70%, it's 90%?
