Hi Guys, I'm a European who wanted Trump to win, just to see what he would do. So far I'm enjoying it bigly, and looking forward to the next twitter rant, or executive order that offends the entire world. Now that he's in power, I think that he will want to get rid of the 2 term limit. What do others think? I think he is already guaranteed to get re-elected in 4 years if he does what his supporters want, and he may even succeed in getting business to focus on America again. Also he will have his own men in charge of the intelligence services, and therefore access to the secrets on every potential candidate. So given that he is likely to get a second term, do you think that he would want to leave power peacefully?
Uh, I don't think a second term is as in the bag as you make it out. We'll have to see. Give the guy a chance here, he's been in office for like 10 days. Additionally, I highly doubt he will try to do away with Presidential term limits when he's campaigned on installing term limits in congress. Lastly, even if he went full-blown dictator (or tried) you need a bit better understanding of our political system before you can say that would happen.
You are probably right. I tried Googling the term limits, but couldn't figure out how is controlled, and what can change it. Interesting times though.
The only legal way it could change would be a Constitutional amendment to repeal the 22nd Amendment. While I don't doubt the Lefties in America would have loved to have Odumbo find some way to declare himself "dictator for life", Trump supporters are also supporters of our Constitution. We understand that adherence to our Constitution and Bill of Rights are all that separate us from the rest of the world's crap governments. Even if Trump turns out to be a great president and helps the country immensely, we supporters of the Constitution would revolt against his becoming dictator or even trying to serve more than 2 terms.... repeal of the 22nd Amendment notwithstanding.
Essentially, Congress (Senate and the House) would have to vote the change (with 2/3rds of each voting yes - which would require Democrats to also approve) in term limits and the President would have to sign it.
Not to mention it would also require ratification by 3/4 of the states. It took nearly 4 years for ratification of the 22nd after being passed by congress. I doubt America can get 38 states to agree on anything these days let alone getting it done in time to extend Trump's presidency.
Trump will no doubt be able to turn the country around in less than four years and be ready for some other adventure. He will be 78 after two terms, so I doubt he is looking for a third term. Trump has a great record of advancing women, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him prepare the way for a female to follow him. We could hardly do better than Ivanka.
It's the economy stupid. Economy always number one If trump suceeds and stuffs american pockets with benjys, he gets a second term from swing voters. End of story.
