I agree that you should look at revenues first. Earnings numbers are very easily can be manipulated while revenues are much harder for companies...

Actually I think the worst thing for any new trader would be start making money right away and then started thinking "Oh, this is easy!".

2-3% lets me have 30-40 positions in my portfolio to better manage risk in case of signle trade going wrong way and hurting performance of my account.
I usually allocate 2-3% for one stock.
