Republicans Fear-Mongering Over ISIS and Mexico Silent on Canadian Border Ben Jacobs, Asawin Suebsaeng GOP lawmakers have been talking up the threat of ISIS jihadists crossing the Mexican border—but even with two Canadian terrorist attacks this week, they’re not saying much about Canada. Politicians have long warned of the threat of Islamist terrorists crossing the United States’ southern border, despite relatively little evidence that ISIS or al Qaeda or any other terrorist group is present in Mexico. But with two terror attacks this week in Canada, at least one of which was confirmed to have been carried out by an Islamist, the question now is whether the real danger to the homeland comes from the north. In contrast to the militarized border between the United States and Mexico, the nearly 4,000-mile border between the United States and Canada is perhaps the world’s most peaceful. There’s been no significant conflict between the two sides since the War of 1812, and travelers and goods cross freely every day. But Canada has been used as a launching pad for attempted terrorist attacks against the United States, and the Department of Homeland Security has long seen the northern border as presenting “a more significant threat” than the southern. As Garrett Graff pointed out in Politico last week, a number of jihadist plots have been hatched in Canada, most notoriously “the Millennium plot,” when an Algerian national intent on planting a bomb at Los Angeles International Airport was caught crossing the border with a truck full of explosives.
So what is the first Canadian response to the terrorist act yesterday... "No uniforms in public for troops" How inane. Maybe if we hide who are our troops then the terrorists will not attack them What would be the proper response? Put the troops in uniform, armed with automatic weapons, send them to sweep all of the mosques and Muslim neighborhoods in Quebec, round up all the terrorists at the point of the gun and put them in jail - and then deport them.
This kind of thing is so unusual in Canada, that this morning a radio announcer slipped and said the standard, "thankfully no one was hurt", then quickly added "thankfully no other persons were hurt once he got inside".
No, from the surveillance that Canada has been doing of these extremists for several years. Keep in mind that the terrorist who ran the car over the soldiers earlier this week had been questioned by police several times already, but they could not find anything to charge him with despite him stating directly he planned to do harm to Canada. Now the gloves need to come off and a strong armed response to domestic terrorism is required. Sending the military to clean out Quebec (the center of Islamic extremism in Canada) is the best starting point. The time for being polite is over.
Revise the Canadian charter and associated laws - make it a crime to preach hate against your fellow citizens or promote radicalization. Supporting or promoting organizations such as ISIS which Canada is at war with should be viewed as treason with appropriate penalties applied. Outlaw Hamas and other similar organizations in Canada. The time for the endless Canadian tolerance of the Islamic community pushing Sharia law and hatred against everyone else is over. Either they integrate into western society based on our standards and laws --- or they should leave.
That's fine for Canada, I guess. But if you advocate making it a crime to preach hate against your fellow citizens here in the US, you're going down a slippery slope against Freedom of Speech. I don't like it any more than you do, but hate speech should be allowed with the rest of speech.
