Of course DB is right. But if anyone 'started it', then christians had already 'started it'. What sort of thesis exactly is it that you need to understand the blindingly obvious? Romans had declared themselves christian, so to all intents and purposes, the invading force, the Imperial aggressors, the occupying Byzantine Empire were christians. Christians were starting it long before any muslims or Islam could start anything.
