  1. Prosecutor Says Rick Perry Seeking 'Special Favors'
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The special prosecutor who secured two felony indictments against Rick Perry said Tuesday that Texas' Republican governor is making a "mockery" of the criminal justice system and shouldn't be excused from a pretrial hearing.

The comments from San Antonio-based special prosecutor Michael Crum came a day after Perry asked a judge to excuse him from an Oct. 13 hearing because he will be in Europe that week for a tour to encourage foreign investment in Texas.

In his remarks to the newspaper, McCrum also referred to hundreds of supporters turning up to rally at the Austin courthouse where Perry was booked last month and the governor's "smirking" in his mug shot.

"I've never seen a defendant make such a mockery of our system of justice," McCrum said.

Perry is not seeking re-election in November but is considering a second presidential run in 2016, after his bid three years ago flamed out in a series of public gaffes. He's denied all wrongdoing, calling the case a political ploy.

A conservative group with financial and political ties to the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch sent hundreds of North Carolina voters -- and at least one cat -- incorrect voter registration information, according to the State Board of Elections.

The Raleigh News & Observer first reported Thursday that Americans for Prosperity's North Carolina chapter was responsible for sending an “official application form” to voters that contained erroneous information.

The mailers contained conflicting information about the deadline to submit voter registration forms, incorrect contact information for the Secretary of State and State Board of Elections offices and an incorrect explanation about how voters are notified that their information has been received.

The group did not respond to a request from The Huffington Post for comment about the inaccuracies.

Joshua Lawson, a public information officer with the State Board of Elections, told the paper that his office has been receiving phone calls "all day, every day" asking about the mailings. He said that one resident had even received a registration form addressed to her cat.

“It’s unclear where [Americans for Prosperity] got their list, but it’s caused a lot of confusion for people in the state,” Lawson said, explaining that the group did not alert the board before sending the forms.

Misinformation about voter registration can be a felony if it is intentionally misleading and suppresses votes.
