You know, it would be interesting to build your own antenna. It reminds me of the competitions we had in high school to build the strongest bridge. I have also thought it interesting to build my own telescope instead of buying one.

I wonder how hard it would be to build an antenna?

Not hard at all, I did it.

BTW I used real (bare) copper wires `stead of hangers.

How many miles of reception do you get? My problem is that I am probably 20 miles from the broadcast antenna.

I cut of my television service which was direct TV (no cable here) five years ago. I can't receive over the air television at my house either. Anything I want to watch is available on the internet.

  7. ROKU + a few subscriptions and I have more stuff to watch than I should ever spend the time on

There are a number of variables, like height and trees so it is a huge YMMV. I mostly made it because it was fun, but it does work good enough to get football which is the only thing I watch on TV. Plus it's a huge status when hanging with techs to brag about your home made HD antenna :).

One bad thing is the damn thing likes to fall over. I don't have it attached to anything since it only stays out during pigskin season. So now all the copper are no longer perfectly straight. And I bet most of the angles are off. Still works good enough to watch the playoffs this weekend.

You can also buy antennas. My GF uses a pair of different ones that are cheap and seem to work good together.

And finally if you are cutting the cord:
