The EU is replacing oil maybe. Ten years ago they were all abuzz with talk of the hydrogen economy. It takes these math free zone politicians a while to understand technical things but they got it; hydorgen is more of an energy storage mechanism than a fuel.. so now they are going to tap the solar energy in the Sahara Desert. That infrastructure project will beef up employment for a few years and they will have cheap electricity galore, not that they don't currently... The US can mimic that effort, with just back of the envelope calculations it's easy to prove that our Mojave Desert region alone is way bigger than what is needed to supply cheap energy to every home and car in North America.. and it joins two other deserts, the Sonoran and the Eastern at the Colorado river around the town of Needles. Check the temperature of Needles in late July sometime, it's really hot there... and if you follow the Sonoran Desert south you will find areas that hit 140 degrees regularly... but watch out for the drug factories up the mountains from there... The Bush admin screwed around with Hydrogen and put $5 billion into research, the Obama one wants wind farms... politics is about anything that doesn't really work for our best interests is it not?

Agreed....solar thermal....is the future....along with the next new wave of batteries......"forms of storage".....

    Solar thermal....not solar panel....
    ......................................

Although ie the current 6V lead acid battery inverter systems are usable for many of the world's homes....they are already widely utilized throughout LA....to check rotting intermitantly operating grid systems....

What is missing is the solar thermal side of the equation...

Would like to see solar thermal home based as well....because the broad based systems ...."will still be in charge ".....of prices....not good....and there is rampant theft of electricity throughout the LA region....thus creating exhorbitant prices for those that pay....

    ............................................................
And without oil needs ....the US will have no further involvement whatsoever in the ME.....about as much as Haiti....token IMF sums etc....
