My first job out of college was with a unionized Defense company located in Long Island. All the engineers were unionized. Engineers were not allowed to touch anything or have tools like screw drivers in their desk. If you wanted something electronic measured or adjust something with a screwdriver then you needed to have someone in the Electronics Technicians union do it. If you failed to follow the rules, then they would filed grievances and you would land up in the "grievance court". Naturally everyone got the exact same pay raise at the exact same time, no matter how good or bad their performance. The long term union members literally sat around and read newspapers all day and refused to do any work. We called them 'humps' - short for human lumps. All the union stewards earned at most $80,000 per year in salary - they all lived in $3 million dollar houses. Some drove several different ($200K plus) cars - a different car for every day of the week in some cases. Of course, nobody could track what happened to all the money we paid union dues. Naturally, when the union went on strike the members were paid a mere $75 per week out of the union 'trust fund'. The union was strictly last on - first off. So after a year or so the company had a lay-off and I was let go. It was the biggest favor they ever did for me, but the union took all of my vacation pay as an 'exit fee'. The company briefly had me come back as a contractor a week after I was let go because I was the only one who knew how to use the GE Calma system to design microwave circuits. I immediately started to get threaten phone calls from union members threatening me with bodily harm and my car was damaged in the parking lot. I quickly dropped the contracting gig. I will NEVER work again for a unionized company.
Unions = "We want money. We want control. If you don't give us what we demand, we're gonna fuck you over as best we can". Now THERE'S a concept!
If this is true of unions in general, then it's true of management in general, too. Which is kind of the whole point of unionism, countervailing power, right?
