Interesting idea. I think the markets would love this. Probably won't happen if the Dems capture the House in November, but I could see this passing in 2019 if the Republicans hold. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...exing-capital-gains-to-inflation?srnd=premium
So much for simplifying the tax codes. We have 3 capital gains rates now and indexing to adjust for inflation? I'm not for that. Let's just have one rate at 15% and be done with it.
All you would have to do is put your starting basis into a calculator. I think the big benefit would be for buy and hold over decades.
Paying any rate on profits that are non-existent because of inflation is not economic fairness. of course fairness has nothing to do with tax law. it is the reason that long term holders lock up stock and never sell. it is surprising that an investment professional like yourself has this attitude.
Why should you not pay taxes just because of inflation? Is the government supposed to guarantee you purchasing power?
Exactly. Rates rise with inflation. We're looking at adding another trillion to the debt due to tax cuts and they want indexing. Sure, let's make the CG-rate 5x STIRs. They'll love that.
the answer is yes. it should maintain your purchasing power and not bankrupt savers through wasteful policies.
