State Dept Spox Draws Laughs: Obama ‘Doesn’t Give Himself Enough Credit’ on Foreign Policy

State Department spokesperson Jennifer Psaki drew laughs from the press corps on Thursday when she insisted that President Barack Obama “doesn’t give himself enough credit” for his foreign policy successes. When pressed by reporters in attendance on what those successes were, Psaki said that this administration’s level of “engagement” in global affairs was laudable.

“I would argue the president doesn’t give himself enough credit for what he’s done around the world, and that’s how the secretary feels too,” Psaki said.

“Jen, you would argue the president doesn’t give himself enough credit? How much credit would you give him?” Associated Press reporter Matt Lee asked.

“I would give him more than he has given himself,” the State Department spokesperson clarified.

When a reporter noted that the foreign policy successes she cited in places like Ukraine and Iran were debatable, Psaki stressed this administration’s level of “engagement” as a success.

“We’re talking about engagement in the world and taking on tough issues that present themselves,” she concluded. “And the United States continues to play a prominent role doing that.”
