Self Sabotage for traders

Discussion in 'Psychology' started by Trading Education Buyer, Dec 10, 2016.

  1. There are many causes of traders losing control , with revenge trades , entering higher trade sizes , need to be right by opening and closing trades , amygdala hijack , impulsive trades , stress response trades , frustrations in choppy markets , loss averse tactics , impatience , putting on non edge trades , breaking rules , desires to make money on days when you should not be trading , having stupid trading thoughts /biases /beliefs in your mind and other pychological issues of the human mind .

Few people are likely to understand self sabotage more than traders. While it’s an innate tendency in almost all of us, traders get to experience it more often and more directly than most others. If you’ve traded for any period of time, you know what I’m talking about. It seems like whenever things start to go well, you find a way to mess it up. It almost feels like you want yourself to fail. But how could that be? Who would want themselves to fail?

Let us say the market annoys you , frustrates you and triggers an emotional/amygdala hijack.

How do you stop self Sabotage?

  2. May I suggest you explain your own situation.
A key aspect in sorting out one's self-sabotaging issues is the self-honesty to recognise one's problem as it is.
So what is it you are doing, you yourself, specifically?
Do you have an example where this occured? what did it cost you?

Opening a "general" thread, could be a way to try to dilute one's issue among others:
    that is not self-honesty.

So tell us about YOUR situation, the specificities of your unique situation in regards to self-sabotage.

Damn!!! All these people who want the goods, but are afraid to put their ego on the line. :D :D :D

Revenge trading was a big problem for me. Whenever I lost a trade I alway's felt that the market owed me something and I would take another trade and expeting the price to move the way I wanted.

Can't make money until you have lost enough to pay for all your sins. I know I don't deserve to win. Tried to get to where I thought I finally deserved to win, but I know that is just not true. If it was the guy on the other side would also deserve to win. The Book of Job. It's the oldest story in the bible, written even before Genesis they say. Once I was able to divorce profits and losses and everything in my life from the Law of Karma I was free to win or lose regardless of my personal performance, past present or future.

  6. I am going give it all to you , after you confirm your own issues , how you were self sabotaging your own trading .Make a dick of yourself first , then we play your game.

What were your actions of actual self sabotage?

  7. You want to win more money from the market , than the market takes from you .It makes you feel better. Is this a cause of factors leading to self sabotage or your desires to take money everyday from the market , even on days when there is no trade with an edge.

Market frustates you , after losses ,it annoys you after taking out your stops and it stresses you out .These add up to an emotional hijack and reactive trades. It is like trading on XBOX , clicking buttons to win and playing the market's game.

  8. 1)Start with mindfullness and breathing exercises .This will make you more aware of self sabotaging reactive , impulse ,emotional and stress response trades

2)Understand amyglada hijackings .Self sabotaging is done when your rational brain is hijacked by emotions

    3) Understand stress responses i.e fight (increase trade size ) , flight (take a loss a and run or trade risk aversion) or freeze (do nothing , sometimes your brain freezes in real time).

4)Understand you are humans with emotions and stress responses , this is not an xbox game clicking mouse after move (this is simulation mindset that requires proper training for real accounts with real loss) , prepare your self mentally for real loss and focus on doing the job right , as per your trading plan.

    5) Prepare a psychological /mindset trading plan to be a disciplined trader , who is ready to negate stress responses , emotional decisions , the need to be right and prepare a trading plan to incorporate these three virtues , as top of the list.It will helpyou reduce risks of self sabotage

    https://www.elitetrader.com/et/threads/livermore-emotions-and-mind-of-a-gambler-trader.304968/

6)Then prepare a technical trading plan , which is very simple .Forget complex price action courses and education , the human brain is poor at processing all this subjective illusions of price action and will be hugely affected by pychological as in 5).Trade only one strategy , otherwise your brain will be confused and messed up.K I S S .Either be a trend trader or support and resistance trader , trading supports is an edge in trading stock market indices.See here

    https://www.elitetrader.com/et/threads/traders-trade-emotions-they-dont-trade-methods.303238/

7)Trade only one strategy , if you are a screen based trader and avoid scalping and noise trading , the market is tricky and will mess you up and play your weakness.Screen based trading is done by the emotional brain , rational brain is blocked and emotional brain calls trade desires ,it will lead to disaster for most humans.Trading too many strategies will be too difficult for you phsyche , with stress ,emotions and need to be right.
There are better methods of trading , that don't involve the risk of 5)

    The EDGE of premium decay

Keep your information in your trading plan simple .It will helpyou reduce risks of self sabotage

8)Don't delude your self that you can time the markets , and that you have a market timing edge. You don't.

9)Learn sun tzu. It will helpyou reduce risks of self sabotage

10)Remove all cravings to be a highly sophisticated trader.Be a simple professional , without detrimental influential thoughts. These thoughts become action , under stress and pressure .Your subconcious mind uses this memory of detrimental thoughts .

11 )Become a very patient trader , you will make a lot of money
Patience is the professional's edge. Here is a live example , wait for a quality edge trade , then go for it and run your profits and have the patience to run your profits.

Edge of buying the stock market dip

    12)Stay focussed

13 ) Do daily mental preparations like athletes and rehearse your daily plan

14)Develop a probability based mindset.Avoid the need to be right

    https://www.elitetrader.com/et/thre...need-to-be-right-in-trading-decisions.304141/

15)Never look at your profit/loss whilst trading , looking arouses emotions and amyglada hijackings , it triggers emotions of fear , greed and revenge.Trade your system/method , not your profit or loss(account)

16)Understand the psycholgy of revenge trades

The psychology of revege trading , is shown in this movie .In trading , it happens within seconds in trading.

17 )Prepare mentally with mental rehearsals , for loss and losing trades and sequences of losing trades
Make sure you are risking what you feel comfortable risking, nothing worse than a trader risking more than they can handle

Accept the loss if it happens, it is part of trading and remember as long as you are following a trading plan, process that losses are less than winning trades. So stay positive and try not to let it effect you emotionally. Try not to let the loss make you feel like you should start breaking your trading rules and trading outside your trading plan and strategy in order to make the profits back.

18)Prepare to handle uncertainty and the unexpected that the market throws in highly volatile situations.Have a trading plan and method which incorporates uncertainty.

    https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=uncertainty&tbm=vid

19)option based set and forget strategies will reduce the psychological disadvantages of how human brains are wire.Devise set and forget strategies.

20)Muliple screens don't increase your odds of more profits , they trigger wires in your self sabotage brain. You need a simple mind , that is stress free and emotionally clear , all these multiple screens are detrimental.

A few more rules I will add later

you talkin to me dumbass? I'm mad, but not at you, at me, for getting sucked into what I thought is an interesting life topic and let a know it all prick turn it into an advice column. Good luck breathing somewhere far away from me. The air is a little rarified up where I live, I don't like to see it wasted.
