Chris Myers resigns as Medford mayor

    Move follows alleged sex scandal

MEDFORD — Chris Myers resigned as Medford mayor Monday, about a month after declaring he would not quit in the midst of an alleged pay-for-gay sex scandal.

“My work commitments will not allow me to devote the time that is needed in the months ahead,” the 46-year-old wrote at the end of a two-page letter to the township manager and clerk. “That is why, today, I am resigning from the Medford Township Council, effective immediately.”

But Myers appears to be unemployed. Last month, he was put on administrative leave by his former employer, Lockheed Martin. Company representatives said the Republican’s alleged scandal caused workplace distractions. And company spokesman Keith Little said Monday, “Chris Myers left Lockheed Martin on Dec. 1 to pursue other employment.”

Myers has missed or postponed council meetings, and has faced calls for his resignation since allegations about his private life became public knowledge. He told the Courier-Post in late October that he would not resign.

An anonymous person, claiming to be a male escort, launched a website in early October with photos allegedly depicting Myers in his underwear in a California hotel room. The website also showed alleged pictures of Myers’ open wallet and mayoral ID card. The site has been inaccessible since Oct. 21.

The alleged escort claims Myers, the married father of two, paid $500 for sex, but did not provide him a car and other promised gifts.

Myers has told the Courier-Post he was in California on business around the time of the alleged sexual encounter in October 2010.

“I can't comment on something I don't know,” Myers repeated to questions for an Oct. 27 Courier-Post report. At that time, Myers didn’t deny the allegations or answer whether he was gay or bisexual.

But at a Nov. 3 council meeting — his only public meeting appearance since the allegations — Myers “categorically” denied the allegations.

In announcing his resignation, Myers said he felt “it’s time to pass the baton, and allow others to take the reins.” In a prepared comment, Myers said he was “looking forward to leaving the public arena and enjoying the next chapter of my life with the most wonderful family and friends any one could ask for.”
