‘Mass purge’: Sarah Sanders implements new standard that disqualifies ‘almost the entire White House press corps’

hite House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has quietly implemented a new standard that has resulted in what one journalist calls “a mass purge” of “almost the entire White House press corps.”

Huckabee Sanders revoked the press credentials, known as a “hard pass,” for all Washington Post reporters assigned to cover the White House, and many others. That would be six correspondents, and Dana Milbank, a veteran journalist who writes an opinion column at the Washington Post, and is the first to report this story.

“After covering four presidents, I received an email informing me that Trump’s press office had revoked my White House credential,” Milbank writes in The Washington Post Wednesday evening.

“It was part of a mass purge of ‘hard pass’ holders after the White House implemented a new standard that designated as unqualified almost the entire White House press corps, including all six of The Post’s White House correspondents,” Milbank continues. “White House officials then chose which journalists would be granted ‘exceptions.’ It did this over objections from news organizations and the White House Correspondents’ Association.”

It is not known which reporters or news outlets were granted exceptions.

“The Post requested exceptions for its six White House reporters and for me, saying that this access is essential to our work,” Milbank adds. “The White House press office granted exceptions to the other six, but not to me. I strongly suspect it’s because I’m a Trump critic. The move is perfectly in line with Trump’s banning of certain news organizations, including The Post, from his campaign events, and his threats to revoke White House credentials of journalists he doesn’t like.”

What is this new standard the White House has concocted?

Milbank reports it is “a clear — if nearly impossible — standard: No credentials to any journalist who is not in the building on at least 90 out of the previous 180 days — in other words, seven of every 10 workdays. The White House wouldn’t provide numbers, but it appears most of the White House press corps didn’t qualify for credentials under the new standard, including regulars for The Post and the Associated Press.”

  2. All the lefty media had their little fun with Sarah at the White House Correspondent dinner, by bringing in some ruthless sweathog "comedian" to denigrate her.

    Who's laughing now?

    elderado likes this.
  3. So if you criticize a White House official you can have your press pass revoked. Got it.

  4. Where do the rules say that? They are reducing the number of journalists to those who are more or less assigned to the white house rather than the rotating crowd of attention-seekers who show up to be on the news that day. No mention of singling out people.

When Jim Acosta decided that the white house press conferences were his own little personal reality show, Trump banned him. Then Acosta went to court and go reinstated because the court said that the white house needed to have rules and criteria on record that were known and available to all.

DONE - You have to have demonstrated level of presence and assignment and on-duty time to be counted among white house press corps. The rules specify how much time is required to show you full time assignment to the press corps.

Go ahead and run off to the courts again. If more rules need to be added that can be done. Might need to go back and forth and bit and that is fine. In the end there is no right for everyone to be there but probably a right to have decisions be ruled-based. No emergency. Can even go up to the supreme court and see what Trumps two or three appointments think of it over time.

Acosta can keep being an asshole too. See if that helps. So far what he has accomplished is getting most of his colleagues banned now. Let's see how popular he is at the next meeting of the white house correspondents association. You are a young reporter, not getting paid much, but your mom back in Pocatello Idaho has been seeing you at those press conferences. Sorry mom. There is always Skype.

  5. So they have to be at their designated work station 7 out of 10 workdays. At any company that I ever worked for attendance as poor as that would have you terminated. Who do these assholes think they are, congress?

They don't work for the WH, most companies have employees that multi task.

  7. I dont know how the "must be in the building" 90 out of 180 days is defined. I presume it is to help define those who are regularly assigned to the daily news conference. As in: you showed up on that day. I dont think the wh is telling you that you can't multi-task such as going to Arby's or down to your local porn theater later if that is your regular habit.

As I said, earlier, they are taking a stab at setting rules. If they have to go back to the court and get more clarification as to what is acceptable. NOT A PROB. In the end, they can just announce that there will only be press conferences on the first Monday of the month, if people get too anal. And they can thank their buddy Jim Acosta for that. And maybe once a month is too much. Just read updates on the white house website and go off and have a nice day.

  8. There is plenty of time in the day to attend their press conference and then go to other duties or assignments. It's not a 9 to 5 career and they knew that when they took the job. These assholes want the job, then do the job. Otherwise they can quit and go wait tables which is the extent of their skill set.

You don't get it, do you? The government does not pay their salary and they do not get to dictate how these independent workers get to allocate their time. That's their bosses job. None of them were booted from their post by their boss.

  10. So you have gone ahead and answered the question I had above as to whether "in the building" 90 days out of 180, means all day or whether it just means showing up for some part of the day to sort them into the category of actively assigned and engaged as a white house correspondent versus just showing up when you want.

I guess your special Batman Decoder Ring was able to interpret that clause when others cannot. If it means "showing up for the press conference or at the press office space on the white house grounds for the press conference or the lie, then that does not preclude them from going off and doing other things at other times that day. Nor does it imply that they work for the white house.
