Papa John's apologizes for criticizing NFL anthem protests

Papa John's Pizza apologized Tuesday night for comments made by CEO John Schnatter blaming sluggish pizza sales on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem.

The Louisville, Kentucky-based company is a major NFL sponsor and advertiser, and Schnatter said on an earnings call on Nov. 1 that "NFL leadership has hurt Papa John's shareholders" and that the protests "should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago."

The company tweeted a statement offering to "work with the players and league to find a positive way forward."

"The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive," it said. "That definitely was not our intention.

"We believe in the right to protest inequality and support the players' movement to create a new platform for change. We also believe, as Americans, we should honor our anthem. There is a way to do both."

The movement was started last year by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who kneeled to protest what he said was police mistreatment of blacks. More players began kneeling after President Donald Trump said at an Alabama rally in September that team owners should get rid of players who protest during the anthem.

Papa John's added that it is "open to ideas from all. Except neo-Nazis." It previously has tried to distance itself from white supremacists who praised Schnatter's comments, saying it does not want those groups to buy its pizza.

The company's stock has fallen by nearly 13 percent since Schnatter's comments.

  2. Another pussy. Good, now I don't have to buy one of their shitty pizzas to support them.

Another example of how a CEO for a company needs to stay the f out of political debate and just do business.

  4. If the stock was up 14%, we wouldn't be hearing any apologies.

It would have been best that the CEO not put his company in the middle of a political debate.

But now that he did -- it is even worse to walk back from their position. This makes it certain that you now piss off not merely 50% of the people but 50% plus the other 50% for a total of 100% of your potential customers.

  6. Be careful.

Why Papa John's reversal on NFL protests won't fly
    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/papa-johns-reversal-nfl-protests-wont-fly-164653920.html

Papa John’s is attempting a public reversal.

The company, on its official Twitter account, apologized last week for “statements made on our earnings call” two weeks earlier. On the Nov. 1 call, Papa John’s reported same-store sales growth of just 1% in the quarter, which missed analyst expectations. CEO John Schnatter blamed the flat sales on the NFL: “The NFL has hurt us by not resolving the current debacle to the players’ and owners’ satisfaction… NFL leadership has hurt Papa John’s shareholders.”

Now, in three tweets, Papa John’s says those comments “were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive. That definitely was not our intention… We believe in the right to protest inequality and support the players’ movement to create a new platform for change. We also believe together, as Americans, we should honor our anthem. There is a way to do both.”

    Is there, really?

Certainly it is possible for players to protest during the national anthem while still honoring the anthem and the flag — a number of players have sought alternate ways to do this, such as standing with linked arms rather than kneeling. But in 2017, football fans have generally not allowed brands to play to both sides of the political controversy hanging over this NFL season.

Papa John’s is trying to have it both ways at a time when consumers will not allow it.

  8. BurgerKing could get away with playing both sides..hang on WTF is "Be Your Way" !? I did not see this as I've been in Spanish speaking countries. This really is like the movie Idiocracy.

"Burger King has scrapped its 40-year-old Have It Your Way slogan in favor of the more personal - but also grammatically challenged - Be Your Way.

The chain said it has already started to roll out the new tag line across its marketing in the U.S., including in a TV ad airing on Monday night. The line made its first appearance in an online video last month.

According to Burger King the new motto is intended to remind people that ‘they can and should live how they want anytime. It's ok to not be perfect... Self-expression is most important and it's our differences that make us individuals instead of robots.’
