I have noticed sometimes the open interest can be zero. But the open interest of the price point above and below the zero open interest price point can be in the thousands. Someone care to enlighten me?

New pricing + thin market = bumpy open interest.

Could be a lot of reasons, but thousands and little else at other strikes could be a structured product. Easy to search if you have access to a Bloomberg. Could just be bumpy O.I. as mentioned and that is the most likely. Puts could also be ESOP or some hedging.
    A number of possibilities.
Do you see a possible verticle in the O.I. - that could indicate a structured product.
