When Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey premiered on Fox last Sunday, it was the first time in decades that a show dedicated to science was appearing on prime time on a major network. The show’s host, Neil deGrasse Tyson, has a knack for saying seemingly non-controversial statements that never-the-less get under the skin of America’s religious conservatives.

Tyson waited until the last ten minutes of the show’s premiere to bring up the theory of evolution. But just before he described how humans “stood up and parted ways from” our ancestors, viewers in Oklahoma City were treated to sharp mid-scene cutaway to a local news promo. After about 15 seconds, when Tyson had finished talking about the human transition to “standing on two feet,” the station returned to the show.

While on the subject of this new program: I thought the show was very good, and the graphics awesome. I always liked Tyson, ever since I saw him talking about what would happen to a human body after entering the event horizon of a black hole. I liked the part when he said at the end of his statement: "I think about that a lot". Then he kind of laughed. The man loves what he does, and is nothing short of brilliant.

It is unfortunate that a segment was cut away in some areas (fortunately not mine). May just watch it on NATGEO instead, anyway, to be sure.

I own Sagan's version, with the updates. Is this Cosmos worth buying?

I'd like to see some more episodes, but seems promising. Did you miss the first episode on Sun?

    Here's a trailer.

I miss them all when they come out, since I don't watch TV. I only buy full seasons of shows, typically through itunes. So I'll have to wait. Thanks, tho.

Good way to dodge the commercials. I DVR everything for that reason.

Yeah! Preserves the show's continuity, saves time, AND saves money. While I used to DVR as well, my cable bill was $180 a month and I was regularly recording maybe four shows on average. I learned I could buy them on itunes for about $50 a season, and watch them over a typical season of three months, saving me over $500 and a whole lot of headache. But, I didn't see the infamous "red wedding" of Game of Thrones until a year later, lol.
