Need advice on trading computer, and monitors

  1. I know a broker on long island who did that. He calls all the time in that "northern high speed" accent telling me, "man you gotta get one a these! Porn is outstanding! I'm saving tons of money by not dating!":D

I laugh in the phone every time he hits me with that pitch.:D He's a good stock picker though... :D

Many monitor sellers won't let you return them, so check that before you buy anything. Have you decided on the computer?
The post with dot pitch is a good one. With my 30" I have to increase the DPI settings to make the text a little bigger because of the small dot pitch, but the upside is great resolution.

As I said before I would get an inexpensive but workable system and decide what you really want when you are in a position to do so. A pair of 24" can be had for less than a grand, and you can get a pair of cheap 20" monitors for very little. There are no "great" 30 inch monitors right now, they all have one problem or another. I like my NECs but at just under $5k for the pair I wouldn't recommend them to any new trader. For the price the 3007wfp-hc is not a bad choice if you just want one large monitor.

I would buy a simple setup with two monitors and then if you become serious about this after several months, then use that setup as your backup computer. Eventually you can spend your profits on whatever computer and monitors you want. If you really want to spend money now I would go with a pair of 24" or 26". They both have the same resolution, so the dot pitch is just a little bigger on the 26".

A professional trader should have two computers, two separate internet connections, and battery backups that will last long enough to get you out of everything.

There are pros and cons to every choice... space, price, resolution... you just have to choose what seems like it would be good for you. Personally, I use 4, 20", UXGA, 1600x1200 + 1, 24".

  4. true. a 30 inch will let me have my basic charting on one monitor. i think. have it strung across 4 now, with execution software on another PC and monitor. I'm running about 25 windows, but could clean this up to about 15 I bet. should fit OK on one big mutha.

  5. That Dell is what I was looking at also. Two of these will cost much more than the other setup you were looking at. just depends on what you really like looking at if you already have the money to buy either one.

  6. hey musclemoney i was kinda in same boat as you just a few weeks ago. my old machine was a pentium 3.0ghz with 1 gig of ram. Was running 6 19"lcds with 3 video cards (matrox g200 quad card that i got from ebay about 40 bucks and old ati radeon 32mb card along with the one that came with the computer)

i had to upgrade since i started trading more active stocks recently and my computer would crash. So about a wk ago i got a dell inspirion 530 with intel core2 quad core 2.5 ghz with 2 gib ddr2 800mhz ram and i can tell a huge difference in performance. no crashes at all(ended up costing $820), still running the same cards on new machine, i just had to install xp and take out vista since my old cards don't support vista. for what your doing 4 to 6 screens would be good enough.

  7. The dell outlet has some good refurbished stuff that includes a warranty. 22" monitors for $219. I just bought a new system with two monitors for around $1400
