Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives suffered a historic loss in Baden-Württemberg on Sunday, ending nearly six decades in power. According to exit polls, the Greens will lead a German state for the first time.

The environmentalist Greens and centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) appeared to win a combined 48 percent of the vote in the rich southwestern state, which is normally a stronghold for Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The incumbent CDU and their pro-business Free Democratic (FDP) allies took only 43.7 percent between them.

Merkel's Christian Democrats have governed Baden-Württemberg since 1953, but anger over her nuclear policy in light of the Japan crisis as well as decisions on Libya and the euro angered voters in the run-up to the poll.
