Mac Pro build for trading

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by viruscore1, Aug 4, 2018.

  1. Anyone using mac pro for trading? I have a late 2008 mac pro with dual xeon 2.8 quad processors. It's a nice build, 1st class hardware, but the mac OS and user interface sucks, much prefer windows 7, they say 10 is the way to go. I'm in the process of loading windows 10. Difficult to find hardware compatibility, mac pro hardware is very specific, such as graphics cards, disk drives, memory, keyboard, mouse etc. I'm plugging in old hardware from my parts bin to see what works. Anyone tried this?

  2. Can't say I agree on your opinion of Mac OS and UI, but if you prefer Windows 7, just load Vmware. I run many, many windows only programs on my mac using it...flawlessly.

  3. I got this mac pro free, no hard drive, no mac os, no graphics card. I need to go with what i have on hand, windows or ubuntu, with minimal expense.

I dunno, trade better? It's not much of a Mac Pro without drives or a GPU. And no, a 10yo Mac Pro isn't good for much. It's 2018, Bro.

  6. They said it requires macpro approved graphics card. Well, I have an old nvidia quadro nvs 450 running windows 10 on it so far.

It's only going to run linux. Don't bother trying to bootcamp a machine that old.

  8. It's fun salvaging legacy hardware. Especially dual quad xeons. Plus I have these quad display graphics cards sitting here. They'll run 4 x 1600p 24/7 . No bootcamp, native windows 10 so far.

Well you don't like OS X, but it will run Ubuntu like a champ. It won't run Windows at all. I run a 2017 Mac Pro trashcan as my primary rig and it's fantastic, but you gotta be a mac/BSD guy to appreciate it.

  10. Sounds great, what is the price of your trashcan mac ? I just googled it, wow almost $3k for a mac trashcan. That's one way to spend trading profits.
