Watchdog: Fired FBI official McCabe leaked to media to help himself The Department of Justice’s inspector general concluded that fired FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe made a leak to the media “designed to advance his personal interests at the expense of Department leadership,” according to a copy of the report obtained by The Hill. The report from IG Michael Horowitz makes the case that McCabe authorized disclosures to the media that were designed to combat the perception that he had a conflict of interest in overseeing dual FBI investigations related to former secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “We concluded that McCabe’s decision to confirm the existence of the [Clinton Foundation] Investigation through an anonymously sourced quote, recounting the content of a phone call with a senior Department official in a manner designed to advance his personal interests at the expense of Department leadership, was clearly not within the public interest exception,” Horowitz wrote. McCabe has disputed the charges as politically motivated. His attorney responded immediately on Friday that the report “utterly failed to support the decision to terminate Mr. McCabe.” Michael Bromwich, McCabe’s attorney, also lambasted the process by which he was terminated as “unprecedented, unseemly, and cruel.” The press disclosures in question were made to Wall Street Journal reporter Devlin Barrett shortly after he wrote a story detailing political donations from former Virginia governor and Clinton ally Terry McAuliffe to the failed state Senate campaign of McCabe’s wife, Jill McCabe. In response to follow-up questions from Barrett, McCabe authorized two officials to discuss with Barrett “issues related to the FBI’s Clinton Foundation investigation.” According to the Horowitz report, the disclosures were in part designed “to rebut a narrative that … questioned McCabe’s impartiality in overseeing FBI investigations involving former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and claimed that McCabe had ordered the termination of the [Clinton Foundation] Investigation due to Department of Justice pressure.” The disclosure to Barrett, the report states, “effectively confirmed the existence” of the Clinton Foundation investigation — something then-director James Comey was at that point refusing to do. After the story ran, the report states, McCabe led Comey to believe that he had not authorized the disclosures that lead to Barrett’s story and did not know who did. He allegedly made the same statement to internal investigators when questioned under oath months later. The main finding in the report — lack of candor related to the Wall Street Journal disclosures — was already publicly known, although it fleshes out further details. It reveals that McCabe on Nov. 1 — just days before the election — recused himself from both the Clinton Foundation investigation and the investigation into Clinton’s private email server, which had been effectively reopened just days before. In a separate letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), Horowitz also reveals that his investigation into McCabe’s misconduct did not originate as part of the IG’s broader review into department decision-making during the 2016 election. Instead, Horowitz says, it arose from a referral from the FBI’s Inspection Division, an internal watchdog responsible for maintaining the integrity of its investigations. He lied under oath. As a high FBI official, he should be held to a very rigorous standard, not cut slack. This whole process is a joke.
Plenty more to come on this/McCabe though. Some- including some lefties here- wrongfully conclude that this is the long-awaited IG report. It is not. The IG got a separate referral on McCabe's lying and moved on that separately with a separate report, probably due to the fact that he was leaving and would lose jurisdiction over him soon. But the long-awaited report from the IG about the FBI's handling of the Clinton investigation is yet to come, and Comey, Rosenstein, and McCabe will all take hits on that. It is worth noting that Huber- a real FBI agent with the power to get a subpoena/grand jury etc, unlike the IG who is sort of a compliance officer- was brought in and attached to the IG's investigation AFTER McCabe left. So there is still a lot going on and they have brought in someone to add criminal investigation/prosecutorial power to the IG's civil personnel/rules compliance work. In other words, Huber's job is to sift through all this page/strzok/ohr/comey/rosenstein/ tarmac jungle and figure out who needs to prosecuted and/or where you need subpoena's to investigate people like Comey and McCabe and Lynch who are no longer there and so. Don't get me wrong though. If given a chance the FBI will always cover its own. I am just saying that this IG report does not even remotely mean that the last shoe has dropped and it certainly does not even mean that it is the last IG report. Also, I believe that McCabe could still be in serious trouble because the FBI does cover and protect its own. ie. they know that someone needs to take the fall bigtime here and Comey and Rosenstein will continue to pile on to McCabe to shift the focus away from them. McCabe and Comey and Loretta are all at odds over the facts on different things and I would not even attempt to figure out who the biggest liar in that group is. But they clearly have moved into the mode of protecting their own arses by blaming the other. Rosenstein will sell McCabe down the river in a new york second to cover his own arse. Ditto for Comey. It is a real full, full fledge swampfest. Rosenstein recommends to trump that Comey be fired. Then appoints Mueller to investigate Trump for firing Comey. Definitely does not get any swampier than that. More to come. McCabe needs to be prosecuted though. They got him cold on perjury and lying both under oath and not under oath- both crimes for which they send others to prison rather frequently. And if they dont prosecute him, then the FBI's reputation will continue to spiral down the shithole, and deservedly so. Separately, an interesting read below.
