lol throwing your life away over some copper

The shooting occurred at what started as a peaceful protest in Tiguex Park Monday night where a group of around 300 had gathered to call for the removal of the "La Jornada" sculpture in front of the Albuquerque Museum.

According to a criminal complaint, cell phone video shows a man in a blue shirt, later identified as Baca, trying to “protect” the statue when some sort of altercation occurred, and Baca ran off.

A compilation video posted by someone at the protest Monday shows Baca shoving several women, two the ground, before the shooting occurred.

An undercover officer stationed in the area says he observed a crowd pursuing Baca after that altercation.

Baca was hit by a long-board before he was tackled to the ground the complaint states. Shortly thereafter Baca is seen in cell phone video shooting several rounds from a semi-automatic handgun, hitting Scott Williams, who police say was one of two men who had hit Baca with the long-board.

Officials with the Bernalillo County Clerk's tell KOAT that Baca ran for city council in 2019 but finished fourth.

A civilian armed-militia group known as the New Mexico Civil Guard attended the protest Monday and witnesses tell KOAT the group had been harassing protesters earlier in the evening, but the group took to Facebook to say Baca was not a member of their group.

Stop calling them peaceful protesters. If you are destroying things, you are not peaceful.

Idiots who attack statues are just that, idiots. It's fine to protest peacefully and ask for the statue to be placed in a museum or elsewhere. Destroying historical statues -- you deserve to be shot.

the thing went up in '04 and has been a shitshow from the getgo. The only history to it is the history of vandalism associated to it

1994, not 2004. I wouldn't erect a statue for that guy either but then again, you have statues of George Bush (both of them) around US and they're guilty of killing many more people, both military and civilian.
You can find dirt on most historical leaders.

the current one was 2004. The wikipedia article's conflating statues...the horse one from Alcalde was in the 90's, also vandalized and controversial & removed a few days ago. The shooting one; "La Jornada" was commissioned back in the 90's but installed in '04 in ABQ.
