as an earthquake accredited catastrophe insurance adjuster, why cant these things hit the US?

Not to sounds like a dick, but we are prepared for this stuff here, Haiti and South America are not. Plus I could trade the first couple hours of the session then go work and make another couple grand a day, for several months.

  3. Shortie, you raise a good point. In 2004, on the eve of the giant Tsunami that killed 1/4 of a million people in Thailand , my wife and I were in Hayward, CA. Just before Midnight, she grabbed me in the hall and said "Did you feel that?". It was a minor quake, about a 3.5.
The next morning we awoke to the news about that HUGE undersea quake that caused the giant Tsunami.
    Interesting.....

  4. Also, the 1970 Los Angeles earthquake was a result of a nuclear test in Nevada on a same day.

KGB used to search ocean shelf for "cracks" and was looking to deliver few nuclear devices and blast them in the ocean bottom crevices near California coastline cause tsunamis from hell.

    TECTONIC WEAPONS

Despite the UN convention, to confidential geophysical laboratories in Japan, the United States and South Africa are planned work to develop weapons of mass destruction - the tectonic weapons capable of causing devastating earthquakes in the right place at the right time.

The scientific basis of these developments was the top-secret program of the Soviet military-industrial complex "Mercury 18" (R & D number 2M 08614PK), the results of which fell into the hands of the Japanese residency. In the interest of public safety today, we are forced to publish the "top secret" documents of the Ministry of Defense, which we managed to get in the end seven years of journalistic investigation.
    Earthquake on call

On the night of February 12 this year with the scoop on Chechen national television by the Chairman of the National Security Service (NSS) Chechen Lechi Khultygov. He said that he is in possession prepared by the Federal Security Service plan, under which in the breakaway republic should be triggered by an earthquake, is better than the power of Spitak.

According Lechi Hultygova at the end of December 1997, retired General FSB (was named) gave the Chechen counterparts a package of secret documents revealing the essence of the plan, codenamed "Vesuvius": "February 23 mobile teams set up special services of Russia, must descend into the mine previously prepared in the CR and set in motion powerful devices that can cause a great earthquake ... "(" b ")

Federal Security Service refused to officially comment on the sensation. Chief FSB Alexander Zdanovich argued waiver as follows: "I do not have the opportunity to respond to the allegations bordering on delirium.

In the designated day EMERCOM recorded two tremors at about 50 kilometers east of Grozny. The quake was from 2,5 to 3 points. No injuries or damage was.
Such "delusional" to prevent the threat of so-called tectonic weapons by the Kremlin leaders of different Caucasian republics have repeatedly done before. At this time the solution was at hand. But the secret plan "Vesuvius" Lechi Khultygov took with him to the grave. On 21 June he was killed in Grozny during the riots.

    Was there a secret?
    Race "Geophysical Weapons

At the end of World War II, some scientists proposed to the Soviet command throw Fujiyama powerful bombs to cause an earthquake in Japan and at one stroke put an end to the samurai. The idea then was never realized, but excited the minds of peace-loving party rulers thoroughly and permanently.

After the successful test of the Soviet Union at Novaya Zemlya in 1961, the most powerful in the world of thermonuclear warheads, equivalent to 50 million tons of TNT, the dream of tectonic weapons acquired unprecedented relevance.

Through the efforts of the KGB in the eyes of Nikita Khrushchev fell a scientific and technical book with a report of the American commander of the submarine that his submarine was subjected to the ravages of the shock wave from some high-powered Soviet explosion. In this report was also made a panicky thought and that some fusion of underwater explosions off the coast of the U.S. could lead to flooding of a large part of the North American continent.

The calculation was correct. Imagination Khrushchev immediately drew a picture of the catastrophic damage to U.S. imperialism from dozens of giant tsunamis. And party bosses immediately ordered a detailed study of the possibility of such "exotic" fighting.

The idea of Khrushchev, gently prompted him to the KGB, was perceived by Soviet scientists who had undergone severe trials in Stalin sharashki, very seriously. Suffice it to say that in exploring options for delivery to the coast of the U.S. fusion superbomb actively participated academician Andrei Sakharov. But after a brief theoretical calculations revealed that a large extent and shallow shelf will not hold water nuclear attack. As a result, Siberian Branch of USSR Academy of Sciences through the Ministry of Defense asked the leadership of the CPSU dead-end experiment. But the developers of the tectonic weapons, of course, this did not calm down and rushed into the depths of the ocean.

In the early seventies of the KGB intelligence service had reported that American scientists have actively begun to feel out their faults ocean bottom seismometers, in preparation for geophysical warfare. We, in turn, also rushed to seek faults in the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, to blow up there a couple of nuclear warheads and cause a catastrophic earthquake or a tsunami in California. Since the glorious times we inherited were submersibles "Search" for military use, capable of reaching at least the bottom of the Mariana Trench. A GRU is still keeping secret the names of their officers, pobivshih every conceivable record immersion depth in these manually controlled apparatus and received a Hero of the Soviet Union (!).

  7. I wonder if the same drive of support will come for Chile. Some people have said that Haiti was about foreign policy goals and not humanitarian reasons. Rarely has Bush ever championed humanitarian reasons for example.

If you look at the 20 biggest recorded EQs, something like an astonishing third of them have been in Chile, including the biggest at 9.5 Richter that released ~1000x more energy than the recent Haitian EQ and sent a monster tsunami across the pacific basin. That is one of the reasons that Chile's death toll is relatively small compared to Haiti, even though this EQ makes the Haitian EQ look like a firecracker - they have taken pains to build for EQs and educate their people on what to do.

The depressing thing is that for some reason, Chile has taken an active role in organizing the effort to reduce the effects of living on a major fault line, whereas for some reason Haitians have ignored their problem.

"...Some large earthquakes have small precursors, called foreshocks, but others happen without warning. There is one famous case of earthquake prediction, in Haicheng, China, in 1975. A local official sounded the alarm after many foreshocks and reports of snakes emerging from hibernation. But that prediction was more akin to a hunch than a scientific argument. There have been countless, less publicized instances when predicted earthquakes did not materialize..."
