http://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...1f648c-31a5-11e3-9c68-1cf643210300_print.html We knew it was coming. We just didn't know how craven their backdown would be. I would say pretty craven, given the leverage they had. Now they are seen as just what Obama said they were, thugs trying to subvert democracy and the economy. His poll numbers will soar. What good are "negotiations" with Obama? He will demand a "balanced" approach, ie tax increases. Head republican moron Paul Ryan will push his idioic plans to raise taxes on key republican supporters, eg well-off seniors, by making SS and medicare even more means-tested. The one government benefit most republican voters can count on and he wants to take it away. What a freakin' genius. The republicans had Obama caught between a rock and a hard place. The fact democrats and the media consider the Tea Party congressmen to be irresponsible lunatic yahoos was Boehner's ace in the hole. He could credibly argue that he couldn't control them, so the president woudl have to give or face seeing his legacy go down in flames. For someone with narcississtic personality disorder like Obama, having his destiny controlled by hostile outside forces would have been torture and intolerable in the long run. He would have folded or at least sent Harry Reid out to fold for him. Now however the republican surrender monkeys took their boot off his neck. In their defense, they have bigger priorities, like selling us out on amnesty.
its starting to look like these guys will not hold out for the defunding of obamacare or large cuts in spending. they want an agreement to negotiate? what a bunch of crap. negotiate now... these establishment republicans are going to crack the party in two. and it will cost plenty of them their seats. they need to tell their crony buddies they can not sell out their base on this one... or as a group they will lose so many seats they will become useless.
Right at 3 pm. I wonder why 3 pm. lol limbaugh over one hour for mkt to soar This crew grabs everything they can find out of their conniving playbook to put it over on conservatives. I'm not surprised. I stopped voting for them after 08. They're history to me.
Six weeks. And what will these idiots be able to accomplish is six weeks that they haven't been able to do in...have they ever been able to do anything about this other than take more money from us, while spending even more than they take? I read somewhere today about al qaeda calling us and our government a bunch of fools during this shutdown. You pretty much know you've hit rock bottom when the terrorists are right.
Could the republicans possibly do a worse job explaining their position? Every time they go in front of a mic on the debt ceiling, they should have a chart showing how much Obama has increased the debt. Theyshould say using the debt ceiling is the only way to get him to pay attention. They should make an analogy to cutting up his credit card because he exceeded the spending limit. They should accuse him of being a reckless spender who is saddling our economy with unpayable debts. They should be mocking the "failed Obama economy" which has destroyed our currency and ruined outr childrens' futures. Instead we get this nonsesne about "if's and but's" from Boehner. What does it even mean? The republicans have two very simple messages. One, they will not fund Obamacare because it is a disaster for the country. Two, they will not increase the debt ceiling without signficant spending cuts. Obama's approval rating was 37%, right at Bush's lowest reading and far lower than Clinton's was even after the Lewinsky scandal. Why would Boehner cave now?
The Republican party is becoming largely irrelevant. The are committing suicide and abandoning governance to the Democrats. They did that, however, when they chose a course of action that was not sustainable and threatened something even more ridiculous. This is a party badly in need of adults. I certainly don't agree with you who think they made a mistake by caving, they made their mistake when they embarked on these unsustainable, childish actions. The Republicans have the opportunity to govern because they control the most powerful government body, the House of Representatives. All they have to do is call the Democrats bluff by insisting that any new spending commitments enacted include a mechanism for funding them as part of the Bill. Then the Democrats will look like fools if they don't go along. This will end once and for all this crap about making commitments without funding them. The Republicans hold the purse strings and when they vote for spending and then renege on their commitments they look like a bunch of deadbeats. What fools they are! When the Democrats controlled the House, the Republicans could have forced the Democrats to include a mechanism for funding on any new spending. In fact funding was included with the ACA legislation, passed when the Democrats controlled both houses. Now the Republicans want to wreak the funding mechanism for the ACA. What a bunch of deadbeats!
The republicans' unofficial motto has been "We may be loathsome but the alternative is even worse." That is clearly true but it is dispiriting. Finally, we get some people with a positive message, the Tea Party conservatives, so of course, the establishment republicans attack them.
If you don't like legislation passed by the opposition, take your case to the American people, propose a workable alternative, and build a solid consensus that will be reflected at election time. Instead what we get is tantrums. If you are not articulate enough to propose a sensible alternative and sell it to the electorate, then for god sake don't stomp your feet, and behave like a two-year old. Accept the fact that the democratic process has spoken, and you did not prevail. Don't give up. Keep refining your message and do a better job of selling it. If it makes sense, you will eventually prevail, but work through the regular legislative mechanism, not with Molotov cocktails, and IEDs.
the republicans did not vote for obamacare... it was 100 % democrats. There was no widespread support it was passed by trick and back door bribes and snake in the night politics. Almost every democrats says they really wanted single payer. The president and reid and pelosi sold out the country to insurance companies. the people then put the republicans in control to repeal obamacare. that is what the tea party is doing. it is being undone by establishment sell outs. your analysis is 100% backwards. Cruz and Lee and Paul (pretty much) and the american people are clear. the sellouts are snakes... which is why they speak with a forked and confusing tongue.
