40 million Americans on Food Stamps

  1. (Reuters) - Nearly 40 million Americans received food stamps -- the latest in an ever-higher string of record enrollment that dates from December 2008 and the U.S. recession, according to a government update....

"This is the highest share of the U.S. population on SNAP/food stamps," said the anti-hunger group Food Research and Action Center, using the new name for food stamps, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). "Research suggests that one in three eligible people are not receiving ... benefits."

Enrollment has set a record each month since reaching 31.78 million in December 2008. USDA estimates enrollment will average 40.5 million people this fiscal year, which ends Sept 30, at a cost of up to $59 billion. For fiscal 2011, average enrollment is forecast for 43.3 million people.

  2. And 98% of the 40 million on Food stamps look like marine mammals beached in front of a large-screen plasma TV with a cell-phone stuck in one ear.

  3. The main point here is not the dire state of the economy but the success of the program.

  4. This is rather heartless and blatantly false, don't you think? Many people out there are really struggling. I mean REALLY struggling. I do not doubt that you are accurate in a certain population group. But that number is way out of line.

  5. Who cares about the unwashed masses and their cannon fodder kids for the next war.

    Evolve or die

  6. Lack of food isn't the problem. Obesity is. It's an epidemic. End the food stamp program, reduce the deficit, and advance health care all at the same time.

  7. Just curious, but have you ever spent time at a soup kitchen? Or a food pantry?

Try doing so. You'll see that 98% of them aren't obese. Not even 50% of them are.

Times are tough right now for a lot of folks. Many are embarrassed to come to the pantries, but they do so because they have to feed their children/families.

These are the people you're verbally pissing on here, and they don't deserve it. They're not sitting on the couch with a cell phone and watching TV. They're doing all they can to get by.

Show a little compassion for someone a lot less fortunate than you.

  8. With half the country on welfare or broke, the situation is nearly impossible to extradite ourselves from.

Greeks rioting over pensions and bonuses today. Americans rioting over food-stamps and Social Security, tomorrow.

Sure, there's abuse. But we also lost 9 Million jobs last recession.

The 2001 "jobless recovery" was consumer borrowing. The 2009 "jobless recovery" supplanted consumer borrowing with Government borrowing.

With both the private and public sector up to their eyeballs in debt, how do we keep this train going?

  9. Now you're making this personal? Based on personal, anecdotal evidence? What is the reported obesity rate for the US? Here's a report from John Hopkins, a rather prestigous institution:

The US has the fattest poor people in the world.

  10. The problem isn't what to do. The problem is HOW to do it. It's like some fat-ass asking what to do to lose weight. What to do is obvious: diet and exercise. The question is how to do it. How to regularly drag his fat lazy ass out of bed at dawn and get in a hard 5K run. How to hit the gym and lift weights three days a week, and pass up the Big Macs with a large side of fries.

What to do is get the government the hell out of everything. Government programs distorted housing, education, and health care to the point that it is completely FUBAR. Get government out of health care and a hospital visit will cost about the same as taking your pet to a veterinarian. It will cost pretty much about what people can afford and are willing to pay, because if it costs more the hospital will be out of business. It's basic economics.

  11. I can't wait for people like you to hit rock bottom. You are not just mean hearted and negative individual, you are also stupid.

US spends unbelievable amount of money of military and black projects to maintain its Empire.

And you don't see a fiscal problem with any of that but rather healthcare. LOL you are such a bastard aren't you

  12. i think the issue is the transition.

it will take time for the market to adjust.

  13. “The obesity rate in the United States has increased at an alarming rate over the past three decades."
    ---------------------

In the last 30 years ya think obeseity has increased because we have more food or poorer qualtiy/ high caloric meals?

We probably have a larger population of people with psychiatric disorders.

We had a item on the news yesterday listing the calorie count of various fast foods. When was the last time you seen an ad for an apple or a critique of physical education in schools.

People have oral disorders. if you aren't putting a cellphone next to your head you're taking a sip from a water bottle, gotta keep that mouth moving. Probably to replace the cigarette (btw, there are graphs correlating obesiety with the cessation of smoking of the general population).

  14. After I quit my sales job after school I worked at a grocery store for a few months in Minneapolis. And I will agree with the Retief in that as I recall the majority of food stamps people were obese that came through when I was checking out people. There was(is) a list of foods they could purchase with the stamps, but almost everyone of them would try to buy all kinds of junk food and crap not on the list. They would try this everytime through the store, so I assume some of my coworkers let it slide, but I didn't. I had people using a milk program to try and buy Kool Aid. Is everyone abusing stamps? No obviously not, but there are the leaches that were trained by their parent(s) to look for every scam they can pull, and they stay on the stamps for life because they think it's free food.
Generalizations and exagerations on both sides of the arguement help nothing. The reality it is good for people who use it as a temporary help line, but we now have thousands, maybe millions who think it is their entitlement, and that is b.s.. I met a couple people over the years who easily qualified, but refused to accept the handout, and worked for cash, or whatever they could do, including McDonalds until they got back on their feet.
I remember my high school US History teacher saying his Dad taught he and his brother to hunt specifically to avoid taking handouts when he was a kid and his Dad was out of work.

  15. you just blew the hell out of your argument. have you been to a vet recently? just had my dogs teeth cleaned. $180. way more than it costs at the dentist for humans.

  16. I beg to differ, we are allowed and it is prudent to have a military budget and a healthcare budget. If you cut the military budget by no means equals an increase in health care. Real life doesn't work that way.

If you personally have a "budget" for your auto and you pay it off does this mean you'll increase your contribution to charity by the same amount? I doubt it.

  17. 100% of corporate America on government aid, so I guess the food stamp program is less expensive. If you're going to write blank checks to the blue bloods, then the unwashed masses get a check as well.

  18. that would be a dumb solution. if all the food stamp people in the cities hunted in a couple years all species of game animal would be extinct.

  19. Lol, yea I suppose so. Then again quite a few of the people on food stamps are all ready out hunting and killing each other every night at least around here. Though I suppose we when then have to accept cannabilism.

  20. Nutmeg I have you pegged as better informed than average don't make me UNpeg you :)

US military budget was anything but normal for the last 30 years. Hundreds of billions.

Pentagon 'to boost covert missions in Middle East

Read this article carefully it blatantly shows you that Through assassinations sabotage false flag events US covertly keeps screwing the world over and over again.

Now they are going after Iran. This is how you make enemies. This is how you go broke.

US foreign policy is THE NUMBER ONE fiscal and security problem and that will collapse the USA.

  21. I think the poster was simply saying "teach a man to fish..."

Gardening, raising chickens, fishing or hunting is all the same. Get off the govt lifeline and recapture your spirit.

Personally I think food stamps are okay to get thru a rough patch. When I was a wee child we had to go to the church to beg for food and clothes for a spell. Life has a way of throwing some serious curveballs. But its up to the individual to get back up after that high and inside ball comes at you.

But there should be limitations on what you can "buy" with them. You should not be able to receive any processed junk food products with them. Fruits, veggies, meats or fish.

  22. The problem is tough choices won't be made. Bureaucrats care too much about re-election. And half the voters depend on the welfare/perks/medicare/Social Security they'd be marching to abolish. Nobody has the stomach to end the free lunch because over the half the country benefits from it, in one form or another.

This is why the most likely outcome is Greece. Ride the train until it goes off the cliff. It's also why ethics, morals (spiritual, or otherwise) are so fundamental to an upright society. The freeloader culture destroys the incentive to work and seduces with the lure of something for nothing. Today's America is a long way from the self-reliant, upright America of the 30's.

  23. when i was a kid there were no food stamps.if you were poor once a month you went down to the county courthouse and they gave you commodities..a chunk of hard cheese, powdered mild, meat packaged in a tin can and flour and sugar.
lets be practical though. you really want people in the cities to all start raising chickens? chickens are a dirty bird.

  24. So you're going to stick by your comment that 98% of those on food stamps are obese?

  25. You missed my point. Practical would be encouraging people to fend for themselves. That is all. It would get them outside and feeling more confident..thus leading to work, we hope.

I remember neighbors gettting the "govt cheese blocks"

Oh, and chickens arent dirty if you clean the coupe every day. :)

  26. sometimes they do go out in their cadillac escalade, though.

  27. In this article

"Its goals are to build networks that could penetrate, disrupt, defeat, or destroy militant groups like al-Qaeda, and also prepare the environment for future attacks by American or local military forces."

The paper says the document appears to authorise specific operations in Iran. <<<<< anyone see the connection.

But there is not enough money for American people LOL

  28. Nobody cares about your anti-American conspiracy theory bullshit. Create another alias and try again tomorrow.

  29. Just get on board with the destruction Cold.

  30. Pentagon reported to BBC and BBC made an article. And you are calling it a conspiracy.

You seem to have me mistaken with someone.

You are a certifiable lunatic. I hope you are a shill because no one should be that stupid.
I also hope you are infertile hehe LOL
