Why don't you do some research and tell us how many hedge funds were started in 2011 and compare that to previous years? This information is available on the internet. Perhaps that would help you find an answer to your question.

Chill out dude. The reason I aks if for personal experience. No Trolling alowed

Not trolling in the least. I would think that a study of this type would be more rigorous than some random replies by people who may or may not have any real connections in the hedge fund world.

BTW, I was interviewing for an intern a couple of years ago and one asked a similar question. As a genuine test of their curiosity and abilities I asked them to do this study and come back with an answer. They did so with a very nice analysis. Useful information and that person turned out to be a very good intern.

Agree. It will be impossible for your average joe to start up a fund (or at least have success), which is what started happening the last few years, but for the innovative folks who are good at their trade they'll have opportunity to scale operations, IMO. No different than any other industry.

Billions? No. You don't start managing billions when you start a hedge fund.

Millions? Sure.

But as already stated, this information should be easily available via google.

Quote from chipmunk:

The dream of most traders is one day to become the new Gordon Gekko of trading. Managing acouple of billion $$'s....

Dream...is it possible? Has that boat sailed and long gone?

Everithing is possible just that it's much harder this days than it was few years ago

My friend is launching his own fun this month, it took a few months to carry on with all the preparations and the legal stuffs.

His fund is noting big to speak about just $7M AUM(at least that was the case the last time I've spoke to him).

At least at this stage he will be the only one responsible managing the fund, maybe in the future if he grew the fund big enough for sure he will hire extra operational staff.

Also no need for reception, meeting rooms and a dealing rooms you're not an hotel LOL...for now the reception will be the living room..... ha ha.

Now on a more serious note last thing to mention is that he was setting an offshore hedge fund, less expensive.

The one mistake that most of the people are doing is they are relying on one source without doing any extra reading, reasearch, you have to do your own homework and have to read lots of sources before making any assumption.Relying on one source is not terribly good.

Don't follow the crowd, be a leader.

Regards.

This is WRONG. Offshore Hedge Funds are more expensive to set up and to manage.

Which offshore locale is his fund located in if you know. I think the jurisdiction of the offshore country would make a small difference in expenses.

His corporation based in Panama, and as far as he told me the cost to startup the fund was about $10K in attorney but again anyone must make his/her own due diligence.

Regards.
