Las Vegas traders
I plan on moving to Las Vegas in a couple of months and trading with a pro firm at home. Can anyone recommend if i should use cable or dsl and which company. How is the service out there for companies that offer cable or dsl?
Welcome to Vegas! Cox Cable has in most parts of town been very reliable. they have a 1.5down 256kup standard package for $40ish/month for 1 IP address. I have a commercial package from Cox that allows up 8 IP's for around $100/month. I have noticed with Cox that some areas of town are more reliable than others.....probably because there is so much construction in some parts of town. DSL is in some parts of town..but I have limited expirence with it.

I don't know about COX but with AT&T

Thanks for your reply.Do you need to have cable tv to get a cable modem or can i just have a cable modem without cable tv?

I'm not sure if you need to have cable TV or not. ...they used to charge $10 extra for it..but not sure what they do now..(I've had it for 5yrs now)
cas
Cox cable package around $79, modem included. DSL in the home is only $40 for residential in my area. I have both, just in case for backup, which is a good idea for remote trading.

I know this is off topic, but for any of you guys living in Vegas now,how is the allergy season there? Is it really bad as someone in another thread mentioned,or is it the same as most of the country?
It can be a bit rough, but not nearly as bad as Northern California when I lived there. It's dry here (obviously), and so it's not too bad.

How hard is it to get a mortgage if your occupation is a home based daytrader? What kind of proof of income would the bank want?

Las Vegas vs. Florida
I have a few queries regarding specific neighborhoods and other general LV-related topics which would best be dealt with in a couple of PM's. I therefore invite any Las Vegas-based trader, who is prepared to assist me by answering a few questions, to PM me.
One thing you should consider very seriously is the Casinos
If you are action loving trader, LV has not much culture or anything else for that matter, it is all geared towards getting you into a casino and 'liberating' you from your cash. I used to play poker there and while I did good I loved the town (still do) but I would NEVER live there unless I have a serious business that I must be there for. with Trading you can be in the Cayman or in the Bahamas or any number of more desirable location.
p.s. I rather live in florida than LV.
pps too many 'normal' people I know moved there and lose everything in a bad patch.

Trading in Vegas
Hi, NT.
I've had a decent enough experience with Cox Cable's regular service for the past 4 years. It's not the greatest, but it's never been so bad that i went to the trouble of hooking up DSL either.
By the way, I have satellite tv.... so no need for cable tv hook up.

I am thinking of moving to LV & looking to rent a safe & 1br place in the end of April. When should I fly in to check with rental agent?
NV gross profits tax
Does anyone have a read on how this will play out?
The way it's looking now, it's going to be a disaster for traders.
The proposal is structured to include all proceeds of business sales. If you are filing a 4797, your proceeds are the billions in stock sales you made.

What link is that on NV gross business tax? A friend of mine was dealing with something like that in CA.
Thanks,

www.lasvegas.com has zillions of rentals and real estate people.
SouthEast or West side...not north side of town.....
Also: (Prophet) New tax is possibly a nightmare....I got your email and passed it on to Bob....we've been aware of the implications....just hoping for an "accounting fix" (via exclusions or definitions).....Or at least "grandfather in" firms that have been here 10 years or more and make all the "new guys" pay big time!! :-)
Don
it sounds like Guinn is asking the gross one to be pushed back..but i'm looking for more info in general. This is the overall tax proposal from the State of the State speech last night:
http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_h...s/20517798.html
and yes, NV does not need to become like CA.....that place is a big mess...no need to take any incentive away from people here.
cas
May be I should stay in Fl to avoid the tax.
NV gross recpts tax
Looks like July 2004 will be the earliest implementation of this tax.
About the gross receipts tax- Is there a reason why Nevada is requesting that businesses relocate to other states?
Some states (like TN) have another brilliant business killing tax which is a 1% direct tax on capital- yes it includes computers, office chairs etc... I'm not sure if its a state or county tax, but I know someone in Memphis who had a simple word processing business (a long time ago) and was greatly plagued by that insane tax.

TN has a huge sales tax as well.
How much is Nevada's sales tax? I heard the car registration is pricy.

Quote from MrDinky:
Clark county sales tax is 7.25%. I have no clue how the car registration is calculated and even after asking the DMV workers point blank they couldn't tell me. The best rule of thumb estimate I can give is it seems to be approx $150 per $10K of your car's value per year which would put the annual cost of my AMC Gremlin at about $.01-.02.

My car was $60k. Tax was abt $6600, but that included more than sales tax.
Vehicle Registration Fees Back To Top
The basic registration fee for vehicles under 6,000 pounds is $33. There is a graduated scale for higher weights. Trailers up to 1,000 pounds are $12; 1,000 or above are $24. Nevada charges $20 for vehicle titles and small fees for items such as license plates.
Nevada also charges taxes based on the value of the vehicle:
Governmental Services Tax--helps fund local government and schools
(approx. 1.4% of the depreciated Manufacturers Retail Price)
Supplemental Governmental Services Tax--helps fund road improvements
(25% of Governmental Services Tax--Clark, Washoe and Churchill counties only)
Sales Taxes on Purchases
(7.25% on dealer purchases; slightly less in some rural counties, 5.25% or less on private party purchases)
Use our Online Registration Fee Estimates. (Vehicle Identification Number or MSRP is required.)

I was thinking of taking a vacation to Vegas sometime soon but it would be great if I could combine it with some daytrading business in order to get a tax break. Anyone know of anything that's daytrading related that I could go to in Vegas such as a course or seminar?
Writing off Your Trip to Las Vegas
You may wish to visit some of the daytrading offices here to check out there facilities, services, and suitability to your trading style and needs. By collecting the information and keeping good records of your trip in a file with brochures, etc. your trip may be tax deductible.
Yes, there are seminars here -- all kinds and all prices. If you need more info you are welcome to PM me.
You, will no doubt also hear from Don Bright who will acquaint you with the Bright Trading seminar which is given once or twice a month. I took it -- costs $1,000. If you need an opinion of that seminar PM me and I will respond. (Think it is off topic to include my comments on this thread.)
BTW, most of the comments about Las Vegas as a place to live and trade are incorrectly stated above. Housing is very available both rental and purchase. Very Cheap by most standards. Locals never go to the casinos to gamble unless that is their reason for being in Las Vegas, which is, of course, absurd. The town offers inexpensive living and costs for restaurants etc and are very reasonable. No allergies experienced by me or my family.
Car registration and sales taxes are about the same as most desirable places to live. Other costs like cable or DSL are about the same as well. Cox is very reliable and I have been trading using the mbps service since they came out with it and have never lost money as a result of there service.
There are many tax advantages to trading from here if you are astute at setting yourself up properly. I doubt that the State will commit the suicidal act of not making Las Vegas and Nevada one of the prime states to do business in. Don't really need additional revenue as so much is available from the casinos and tourists. There is talk of raising those taxes to compensate for any shortfalls but the locals would be very up in arms should taxation get anything like California. However, Florida also is tax friendly.
Good Luck
I am going to visit LV for 2 days in the first week of March looking for a rental place, so I can move in the end of April. Need at least 1 br, 1 car garage, DSL, convinient to the strip (like to watch shows & eat), quiet & safe place. Still not clear with which area that I need to focus & whom to contact.

Thanks! I have already talked to an apartment locator: http://www.lasvegasapartments.com/staff.html
She will guide me, hopefully to the right location with DSL & cable modem.
Now I have to worry about how to move my stuff, including should I drive to LV from Fl by myself.

I do not have furnitures, therefore do not have a trialer full of stuff. Just have too much for my car with computer system, books, clothes, etc. Friends suggest that I use UPS/Grey Hound to mail them.

Which local telephone company is better? Need DSL with it too. Which area has DSL? Is it depending on the telephone company?
Figure that cable moden is everywhere.
Need both for backup.
How reliable is COX cable modem? It was down this afternoon.
By the way which company has better health insurance?
Thanks!
It has generally been pretty reliable.....but I think it depends on which part of town you live in. The new construction areas seem to have more problems than the older/well established areas do. I live in Silverado Ranch area, and it went off for about 2 mins today, but came right back.
cas
I am in Rhodes Ranch area. It went down & up & down again yesterday after 2 PM. I had to stop trading
Got this in my inbox. Might interest some in the Vegas area. If not then sorry for the spam.

Depends on what your priorities are. Don's right in saying the West (Summerlin) and Southeast (Green Valley/Henderson) areas of town are the nicest areas to live.
Hi Dustin, __________________
I don't live in LV, but I've spent a good deal of time there.
If you've been in the newer areas of Orange County, CA or greater Phoenix, AZ then you've seen those parts of LV. The development is just about exactly the same. The housing style, storefront setups, medians, and landscaping all share a common look and feel. I suspect it's very similar to the designs in the new areas of San Diego as well.
Quite frankly, whenever I was in Green Valley, with the exception of the views of the McDowell mountains and Camelback, I felt like I was right back in North Scottsdale. Maybe it's a misguided view, but I felt like Summerlin had fewer trees in most parts than did Green Valley and Henderson. I did like Summerlin because of it's proximity to Red Rocks and the surrounding mountain areas; great for mountain biking and running trails.

Quote from Dustin:
Can someone go into further detail where in the West and South sides of Vegas are nice? What about the SW below Summerlin for example? There are a lot of new homes being built there but what is the area like?
Thanks in advance!

OK thanks guys. Don our price range is $275k-375k, and from what I've found online it looks like we will be in the top part of that range for what we want. It's just really hard to look at real estate online when you have no idea what the areas are like.
