Why do I need to connect to internet to use Amibroker?

My laptops database keeps getting deleted because I don't ever connect to the internet with it. At least, that's my theory. I do not have any issue with my desktop, but I tried disconnecting from the internet on my desktop and low and behold, my database magically disappeared.

Lucky I had a backup or I would have been pissed.

I download my data once a week from google. Then I copy that database to my laptop. When I try to open Amibroker on my laptop it crashes before it opens. This does not occur when I have it connected to the internet. Because it is portable, I'm not always connected to the internet with my laptop.

My database is set to use "(local database)" which is on the laptops hard drive.

So, what setting do I have to switch to get it into 'work offline' mode? Any ideas?

    Thanks.

This looks like you have some malware on your laptop because AB never calls for internet connection if being set to local db. Also AB never calls home. It only needs Internet access if you use streaming sources like IQfeed, eSignal, etc or broker connection. Then to get data from those vendors it is quite obvious that Internet connection is required.

Perhaps the malware is hidden in a 3rd party plugin you use. Or your AB is not a legal one.

Why don't you call their support instead of wondering in amateur forums or whatever forum? I would guess they know best instead of some Internet "expert" (like me for example).

I am 100% certain that it isn't malware.

It is likely that it scans network drives/locations. So, it doesn't have to contact the internet itself.

Also, it may have been a common enough issue that everyone has, but I just overlooked the faq item or something.

    Thanks though.

I know a lot of occasions where people were 100% certain but in the end they were not. There is no "100% sure".

And why would it need to scan network drives if set to local (which actually means being offline)? You have opened your DB and that's it. No plugin involved that requests access.

Anyway go to their support instead of wondering and making up some fairy tales. Have you paid for it or not? So what's the problem?

Well, when amibroker boots up, it scans for a database. If no database is found then it prompts you for a database. I can only assume that it's triggering some function that accesses the networking device.

I was thinking that maybe there was an argument I could use to open amibroker via command line. Like C:\>Broker.exe /safemode or something along those lines. So, then I could open a database manually and then there would be no problem. After I boot up while connected to the network then turn off the network device and reboot amibroker it loads fine. But not after a total reboot of my PC.

    My Laptop is a c2d 2.4ghz w/ 8gb ram and my desktop is similar, so I don't think it's a performance issue.

I did ask support, but I haven't heard back from them yet. Maybe they're clueless as I am about this.

But whatever, it's a minor annoyance, not a complete dead end.

In Tools-Preferences-Data you have a default path. That's the path to the default DB that is opened at startup of AB. If it doesn't exist then a window automatically pops up that let's you browse to the location of a database located on your hard drive or an external location becoming your new default database automatically.

If the path defined in tolls-preferences-data can not be found because of being on a new PC then as mentioned a window shows up letting you browse to new location. There is no command line needed for this (while possible too). So there shouldn't be a problem if you do open the new database on your new location.

Yeah, possibly because they are located in Europe and you being located one the other side of the planet or some extraterrestrial location so both sides need some sleep from time to time and therefore can never meet at the same time. Simple fact of life.

  9. you sound pretty confrontational for someone who asked for help. You are asked for a drive or directory if you a) messed with the settings and the file directory was reset, or b) if you run a trial and cannot save data, or c) you run an illegal copy which messes with your system. So, relax, and stop accusing others of not knowing. Obviously nobody here knows exactly what your particular problem is simply because you provided minimal information. Unless service has gone down the drain, I remember from many years ago that response time and service was top notch and trust me, if anyone knows about Amibroker then its Tomsz himself. You most likely tempered with some settings file or copied the Amibroker install dir to somewhere else and following ST.M's last post should get you back on track...

It sounds like your system configuration is sub-optimal.

If you are connected to your network, then your drives should be mapped.
If you are not connected to your network then your drives should not be mapped.
